Arvydas Sabonis, a top-5 all-time center?

Good list, but PEwing was better than Cowens, imo.

lol at Kareem above Shaq. Shaq would have pounded Kareem to the tune of 3 fouls in the first quarter.

Kareem was a stick figure compared to Shaq. Kareem has never faced such a dominating force. Kareem wouldn't have found an answer as to how to guard Shaq.

Are you a Laker fan, a heat fan, a Lebron fan? What are you?

In Kareem's league, Shaq would have had 6 touches, 6 offensive fouls.

  • I dont have any doubt Sabonis would be knocking on the door of the Top 5 if not solidly in had he played in the US from college on.

Top 20 Centers IMO *[I left Mikan off...while I'm sure he belongs in here somewhere, I have no clue where]
    1) Kareem
    2) Wilt

    3) Moses [put him here just to piss people off...and because i'm a Moses homer]
    4) Russell
    5) Olajuwan
    6) Shaq [put him here because of work ethic; with the heart of a Moses, Reed, Thurmond or Mourning, he'd be #1]

    7) Robinson
    8) Ewing
    9) Walton [would have been higher but for injuries]
    10) Thurmond

    11) Sabonis
    12) Reed
    13) Gilmore
    14) Mourning
    15) Cowens

    16) Wes Unseld
    17) Robert Parrish
    18) Bob Lanier
    19) Jerry Lucas
    20) Dwight Howard stir

    What is Kareem's league?

Are you referring to the watered down defenses of the 70's and 80's?

No I don't think he could because no one could really guard Shaq. They played in two completely different eras.

Exactly. Shaq played in the era of the great center (90's) and Kareem went basically his whole career without any real competition.

Honest question. If the Diesel played in the 70's and 80's what do you think he would have done? That's a scary thought...

No way Shaq would have survived in the coke era, he would have been powdering his nose on a nightly basis.

Kareem's league is one where finesse was valued and bull rush post moves were considered offensive fouls. It was a league with less contact.

Bill Walton, Bob McAdoo, Bob Lanier, Dave Cowens, all disagree.

Wow that's a joke. The 70's and 80's they killed each other if they went hard to the rack. Now everything is a flagrant foul.

They got away with alot more back then. What are you talking about do your history.

  • In the 90s the center position was at its apex, nearly all 27 NBA teams had a quality starting center and usually one serviceable back-up.

    I'm still laughing about Walton.

  • I wholeheartedly agree that Sabonis is a top five center all-time. It is a damn shame that he came to Portland when his knees were completely shot, and he was really special during his prime.

This makes me think that a 300lb+ Shaq would never have held up physically in the 70's, he could barely hold up in the 90's and 00's. Without modern day shoe technology and modern day court underlay, also team charters and many other things that benefit the modern day player there is no way Shaq would have been able to stay remotely healthy enough to truly dominate.
