Attending a college and being a fan

I don't have a problem with fans who didn't go to the school.

I have a problem with 'fans' who only become fans after a school wins a NC. To me, that's when you become a bandwagon fan.

I couldn't agree more. My hometown is about 2.5 hours from Baton Rouge and it seems that there are more LSU/Saints (I know NFL isn't the subject at hand, but same principle) as of the past 6-ish years and it grinds my gears. Lots of fans don't attend the school they support - no problem with that - its just that when you wake up, oh say... following a national championship, and are suddenly a super fan and decide to rub it in other's faces that it is a problem.

If I was a bandwagon fan I would have hopped off at some point during the RR years you know.

  • I think its safe to say that there are 0 bandwagon WVU fans. 0 national championships and all.....

I think the state of WV has about 5,000 Marshall fans, but I think that is because they are tortured until they confess their love for Marshall. No other scenario would make someone cheer for that program.

My friend (I'm Canadian) is a huge WVU fan. He started to like them because of Devine and has loved them since.

    Crazy I know.

I have problems with the people who wore a 2009 National Championship shirt with Alabama and the next year a 2010 National Championship shirt with Auburn. Screw you, you bandwagon jumping most likely hippie POS. No way in hell are you a fan of either.

I had someone try to tell me they pulled for both teams. I hate idiots

I don't see that as any different than that "SEC! SEC! SEC!" chant. No difference at all.

I look at it this way: as long as it isn't directly negative for my team, I pull for other SEC schools in OOC contests.

So for example, I will be pulling against SEC schools in most OOC contests in the regular season if they're a rankings obstacle or a threat to my team later in the year...or they're Auburn.

Now Ole Miss against Texas? I will be pulling for the I-Wish-They-Were-Ackbars because they aren't a threat to Bama and it makes the SEC look good. I'll want LSU to lose however because they are a rankings obstacle and a threat.

In bowl games I'll mostly pull for the SEC since it helps the perception of the conference and makes it easier for us to reach the NCG and better bowls.

  • i just wanted to add my two cents. it's not the fact that these people don't go to the school, it's the fact that they insult my education on a regular basis when they are going to community college because they couldn't get into any major school. i love it when Walverines bring up academics or start referring to MSU as "Moo U".

I frankly don't care about any team but USC...we've already dealt with the weak conference thing, and as long as we keep beating any OOC team that will play us, I don't care if the rest of the PAC loses every game and look like fools...they've already been doing that for decades all by themselves...all they care about is to beat USC, then they fall flat on their stupid faces outside the conference.

As a Alabama fan, you should know very well....being in a weak conference does not mean you can't be the best team in the nation. Your past history in the SEC confirms that.

Yeah, the Canadian fan that just so happens to love Michigan Football. It's so odd you went with Michigan and not a team like Illinois or Minnesota. Funny how that works.

Don't worry, there are many like you and they frequent these boards.

I grew up a Florida State fan, but I'm from Missouri. I held no allegiance to Mizzou prior to attending the school, but since my freshman year (also their magical 2007 season), I am one of their biggest fans.

Because I grew up rooting for a school that isn't even near the state of Missouri (and I have no ties to the state), it's understandable that I could have been called a bandwagon fan. I wasn't, but I'm the only one who can verify that - and that's all I need. I still root for FSU, but it is no longer a religion. The school that I'm constantly a part of and exposed to has taken that reign. I'm not sure if that disproves or validates the idea of a bandwagon fan.

But in any case, it doesn't matter. If you started being a fan when you were young, for some justified reason, and have continued that fandom - then you aren't a bandwagon fan. You're just a fan that wasn't fortunate enough to go to your school (which could have been because you had better opportunities).

I wouldnt consider you a bandwagon fan.

First off, I dont care why people pull for a team or if they're a bandwagon fan. I'm a UA alum, and do not care if sidewalks pull for my team or not. My dad is considered a "sidewalk" fan, but I can tell you he is the most loyal/knowledgable/dedicated UA fan I know. He use to tell me stories about bringing his radio to boy scout trips just to listen to the game when he was a kid.

I guess my if I had an opinion, if you're a fan of a team you need to stick with them. Part of being a fan is being there through the highs/lows. The only way you could switch is if you went onto attending the school you're a new fan of.

Sweet, I also have family that went to UM. I guess I should of been big, big supa fan! like you.

Strange how all these traditionally good schools have fans that had a "such and such" attend or I once went when I was a kid and I was hooked. Never seems to work out for the Minnesota's of the world.

Edit: wait, read that wrong. Looks like they didn't even go to UM. They just at one point in their lives lived in Ann Arbor. Wowzers. My dad once worked in Ann Arbor. Again, I guess I should be a big UM fan now. Just look at those connections we have!!!!

    lulz.

I attended LSU, was raised LSU, have more LSU items than can count, and bleed LSU. So I'm clear. You don't need to attend school to be a fan, as long as you love your team through thick and thin than your a fan.
-What pissed me off was when the Saints started winning, so many people jumped on board. I remember going to games on Sunday growing up and paying 10 dollars for lower level tickets. Nobody was at the games, then after the 06 season everybody in LA is a fan.

I was stationed at Keesler in 09. My goodness your not kidding the bandwagon fans in Mississippi were ridiculous.

    lulz.

My cousin did attend UM, and my sister lives there now.

But again your logic is superior.

I live in CANADA, I naturally would choose the team I went to see games of as a child no? Not to mention Michigan is on TV in Toronto more than any team save ND.

So should I chose the team I have the biggest connection with (no matter how little it is), and the team I grew up going to games of? Or just some random team?

Wouldn't it be more bandwagon if I was a Sparty fan?

Run along man, your trolls get dumber by the day. How about you tell me about your job, how hard you work and your wiseness again? That was fun.

EDIT: Or am I not allowed to be a fan at all because I didn't attend an American school?

Lulz you are so sad. Tough break no one cares about MSU football outside of Sparty grads. I know it kills you guys.

I'm going to go to bed crying myself asleep that some kid from Canada loves UM football and is a little bandwagoner.

This might blow your mind but....

99% of all football fans out there aren't thinking about UM. They are concerned with their own team and outside of football season, it doesn't even register. Even fans that consider themselves die hards don't even follow recruiting. There is only a tiny niche of fans that post on these boards and know about other teams. We represent just a fraction of the most committed fans. So when you say that nobody cares about MSU football outside of our fans, it doesn't really mean much of anything. The same can be said for any school. I guess there is an off chance that some random guy in New Mexico could be worrying about Michigan football next year. Your mind = blown.
