Not sure but if it's a new gun make sure you get a few set of prints on it. You never know.

Target shooting 100 to 200 yards.

In combat up to 500m is classed as intermediate.

Ok, I was just wondering. I saw an article on MSNBC.com that says Trayvon Martin was shot at "intermediate range," and wondered if there was an objective number that defines it for every situation. Article is linked.

depends on you, the range/field, your competition etc. For me, of moderate skills, it is what Under says: 100-200 yds.

In that sense I would guess 10-25 feet, which would be odd if it were a fistfight.

Especially because the only fresh abrasion Martin had was a quarter-inch in diameter below his left knuckle.

nah, say zimmerman pulled away and drew his gun.

tryvon is like woah woah and backs away.

    still would be self defense.

i love how this is political... under fla law there is no case

That also seems like a possible outcome as well. I did not mean to be political. I have no idea what happened and I am on neither side. That was just my initial reaction to the post.

  • Big difference between intermediate range in a handgun shooting and rifle target shooting.

Intermediate range is considered 7 to 12 feet distance in a handgun shooting.

  • It depends on the type of firearm (shotgun, handgun, rifle) but also the ability of the shooter. For a guy who picks up a handgun and shoots it, you're probably talking 10-15ft. For a guy who goes to the range frequently, probably 2-3x that range.

  • I think that he was asking in terms of handgun, and of this situation. Rifle is more than an order of magnitude further than a handgun. (edited to replace f for g in handgun) fat fingers

In no way is he afraid for his life if the kid is 10+ feet away.

That's called murder, even if you did just get done having a fistfight.

    TalHawkins112

  • Within 7 feet.

I believe most shootings occur in this range.

  • In intermediate-range wounds, the muzzle is held away from the skin but close enough that it still produces powder tattooing. This type of wound is also characterized by numerous reddish-brown to orange-red lesions around the entrance to the wound.

The passage of a bullet through clothing can alter the appearance of the wound and cause the examiner to reach different conclusions regarding factors such as the range of the gunshot. When there is clothing between the firearm and the skin, you will not find soot and powder on the skin, and searing is lessened or can be prevented. Therefore, the usual methods of determining the distance of the shooter from the victim cannot be used. Whether the powder passes through the clothing depends on the material, the number of layers of clothing, and the form of the powder. Ball powder can penetrate up to three layers of clothing, while flake powder may fail to penetrate a single layer.

Do we have enough information to determine anything? I think intermediate means beyond "very close". Well what's the total range of intermediate? 6 inches - 24 inches? 6 inches - 3 feet? 3 inches - 6 feet? What's the margin for error? 6 inches? 3 feet?

I guess you missed where I posted the police consider 7-12 feet intermediate range.

I got the information from a national police ballistic site.

  • So, guys....what I'm going to do is ask a vague ass question. Then, I'm going to wait for the answer that best serves my point of view. THEN, I'm going to reveal the reasoning. Everyone ready?

-I'm not sure if you know what vague means; question was straight forward and specific

-She responded to the first post that had an actual estimate other than "not short not long"; not sure how that's waiting for the answer that best serves her point of view

-Not sure what revealing the "reasoning" has to do with anything; the answer to the question is the answer to the question

    Is everything okay at home?

Yeah, me too. It's 2:40, I'm surfing, reading TBB, and have a British slasher (I'm desperate) playing in the top right corner of my screen. I was hoping for more from this thread, but it seems some people sleep.
