  • What the old barnerham news tried to spew on everyone. Too bad we were right, again.

    This from January 1, 2007.

Tommy Tuberville is not afraid of Nick Saban.

Tuberville didn't fear him when Saban was a division rival as the LSU coach, and Tom Thumb won't start quivering if everything continues according to plan and Saban becomes an in-state rival as the Alabama coach.

Saban may have a BCS national championship on his resume.

Tuberville has an undefeated season on his.

In a nice change, the Iron Bowl will be a rivalry of equals again.

Saban's NFL season ends today, and insiders say they expect a face-to-face meeting between him and Alabama in the next few days.

And, if the two sides meet, it won't be to get acquainted. It'll be to get a deal done. In principle and in practice.

If Alabama does finalize its best hire since Gene Stallings, no one should expect Auburn to give up its upper hand in the rivalry without a fight.

For his part, Tuberville has more immediate concerns than who'll be the fifth Alabama coach during his Auburn tenure. The Cotton Bowl will be his 100th game as the Auburn coach. Beat Nebraska on Monday, and Tuberville will have his 71st victory with the Tigers against 29 defeats.

The last Alabama coach who made at least that many starts and won at least that many games was Paul Bryant Sr.

Tuberville also has a chance Monday to add another impressive page to the Auburn record book.

Only three football coaches in school history have engineered 11-win seasons: Tuberville, Terry Bowden and Pat Dye. Beat Nebraska, and Tuberville will become the first one to do it twice.

Not that anyone back home in the last month has noticed what's at stake on the other side of the state.

There are a number of reasons why Auburn's bowl preparations have been overshadowed by Alabama's coaching search. Here's the biggest one from the Auburn side: People now expect the Tigers to win 10 games a year.

Of course, people also expect Alabama to change coaches at least once every four years, but each Crimson Tide manhunt is a thrill ride all its own.

Meanwhile, on the placid Plain, all the Tigers have done is average 10 wins a season over the last four years. Beat Nebraska, and they'll up that average to 11 wins a season over the last three years.

It's plain and simple. Auburn is not going to give up football if/when Alabama comes to terms with Saban. The Tigers will just have to keep doing what they've been doing.

Saban made LSU a top-10 program, but Tuberville has made a nice living beating top-10 teams. He's 14-5 against them in the last six years. He's won eight of his last nine meetings with them in the last three years.

He's beaten at least two of them every season for the last five years.

That's very good stuff against the very best opponents. Oh, and head-to-head against the great Saban, Tuberville is 3-2.

Tuberville may be otherwise occupied at the moment, but there are few things more important to the Auburn coach in the long run than the identity of the next Alabama coach.

It looks like Saban may be coming.

If he does, this much is certain:

Tuberville won't be worrying. He'll be waiting.

I don't think Tuberville was scared of Nick Saban. I think he has a 4-4 record against him. The problem wasn't Tuberville. It was Auburns leadership who bailed on him and wanted him gone. I think Tuberville, no, I know Tuberville is a good coach. He's an excellent defensive mind and highly likable. He would kill it at a school with a nice recruiting base in the Southeast. The problem was, After Auburn's BOT tried to throw him to te wolves, he got the "I don't give a damn" attitude. Frankly, I'm gla Tuberville is gone. If you played against his teams and were in the Top 10, chances are you were walkin away losers.

But there ain't a coach I hate more than tommy. His arrogance is the worst. The fear the thumb scene was his worst troll to the tide nation. For that, I'll never forgive him. Well that & when his wife killed a man in a car accident in Texas

That bothered me at the time, not so much anymore. Think about Tuberville like this.....The man won at Ole Miss on a consistent level. Ole Miss. He won Coach of the year in 97 at Ole Miss. He also took that team over when it was under sever sanctions. He's won 5-6 West Titles. Should have had a chance to play for a NC, all with Nick Saban coaching in the same division the majority of the time.

He also didn't have a losing record to any rival. Tied with both UGa and LSU.

Completely. Unfortunately for Auburn, their AD is a puppet. The reason Tommy was the best coach Auburn has ever had is that he was not a puppet. The moment jetgate happened, he cut off access to the program to the wrong people and as soon as they had a chance, they got rid of him. Tommy knew that he has to keep up the 9 or 10 win seasons every year if he was going to make it, IMO. I think he made a poor decision to go to the spread to bring some excitement to Auburn's program after seeing how Saban was going to recruit so that he could get a different type of player and still be successful. There was enough to go around and the way that Saban has gone more nationally to recruit and there are still plenty of players for Auburn in the state of Alabama/West Georgia/Florida panhandle if they are able to get those guys from other schools.

Saban did the same things when he arrived in 2007 that Tuberville did in 2004. He eliminated everyone from the program that had their own or any different agenda. Tommy had the power to do that in 2004, but it was never accepted by the powers at be. That is why Chizik was a good candidate. Not because of his record as a HC obviously, but because he knew the game at Auburn and knew that the oppurtunity was so above him that he was willing to go along with whatever path was put in front of him.

Hopefully, for Auburn's sake, they get a coach in there that isn't afraid to say no and put his foot down when needed. Even more for Auburn, hopefully they get an Athletic Director that enables the coach to do this and for the President to support that as well. Let the fans (no matter their money), be fans and let the coaches/administrators run the school/athletic program, IMO. If old Yellawood was such a good coach/administrator, he wouldn't be in the lumber business.

Kind of like everyone complaining about the SEC. Hey, win a big game and you too can win a BCS title.

Maybe not, but we can look forward to Bama fans rasing their faces out of Auburn's lap. You Bana fans can start regurgitating 8===========D as soon as you like. Thanks for playing. Not sure why Auburn fans care so much what an Alabama fan posts anyway if you think so little of them. Sure seems to get under your skin, IMO.
