Eh. Knowing the church, they'd devote billions of dollars of resources away from people who desperately need help in order to build a new one.

And in order to 'let those who might be devote Catholics have their day', I would have to (at least implicitly) respect the church.

No. The hierarchy of the catholic church is a horrible organization that since it's inception has been, and is still, responsible for untold amounts of human suffering. They deserve no respect whatsoever.

So has the United States.

The US has never claimed to be the height of morality.

I'm Catholic but don't agree with its stances on gay marriage or contraception. I also acknowledge that the sex abuse issues reflect poorly on the church (however, the media has spun that into an "epidemic", which IMO is a gross exaggeration). While throughout its history people have used the church for evil purposes (Crusades, sex scandals, etc), it is also an amazing thing because it was the church started by the disciples of Jesus, and has managed to weather a couple thousand years of change to still mange to be important to billions of people. For every negative example you can give, others can provide countless examples of great things the church has done (such as the work of Mother Teresa). Here in the US, Catholic Charities is an organization that helps the poor that everyone else ignores, regardless of the religious beliefs (or lack thereof) of those in need.

The church is not perfect, and this pope is very conservative (it's hard to expect much else when you almost always have to be conservative to become a cardinal) but the church has done a ton of good for the world and I think that it still warrants respect.
