Bama Needs a JUCO CB in This Class

  • Since I'm banned on BOL, I'll post this here. We need a JUCO CB in this class. After this season our CB roster looks like this:

    Deion Belue SR
    John Fulton rSR
    Geno Smith SO
    Bradley Sylve rSO
    Jabril Washington rSO

    Maurice Smith FR
Anthony Averett FR (Probably will end up at safety)
    Jonathan Ford/Marques White FR

So that's who we have returning. Belue and Fulton should start based on seniority. Belue has played well sporadically, but not up to what we are used to. He will have to do for the moment, but what is of a concern is the other two spots. Fulton has been getting abused. He made a few plays last night but looked lost most the time. It's not a "give him another year to learn the system" type thing anymore. It's a "oh crap, he can't play this position at a high level" type of thing. He will get picked on all year if he is on the field 95% of the time.

Geno Smith is young and talented but I'm not sure he's ready to start. He might not have a choice though, and I think he starts over Fulton if those are the only two options. The others are not ready and might never be.

We like to blitz and put our CB's on an island. Well, next year that might cause problems. Losing our JUCO CB from last year hurt and I think he needs to be replaced in this class. He can give us another option going into the Spring and provide depth if we have a guy go down. Remember, we will have to play Texas A&M again next year ad will need all the CB's we can get.

  • I agree we need Corner help. Disagree about Fulton. He got passed on about 5-6 times on the 1st quarter but played well the rest of the way. I wasn't at the game so I can't determine if he looked lost or not because the TV doesn't show the entire field. He made a couple good stops for TD throws as well. He's undersized though because the guy that he was covering looked like a small tightend.

  • I'm not saying Fulton is not an SEC corner, he is, he's just not a good/above-average SEC corner. The thing is, if he hasn't gotten it down by now, one more year won't mean much. Also, the young guys need to make a move or they are going to get lapped. We will have some very highly rated CB's coming in with the 2014 class.

Thanks. Bama fans hate anything said not 100% in their favor.

I was looking over the JUCO CB's in the rankings and there are some slim picking in there. Man. Maybe Saban can pull a gem or steal Mark Richts CB.

There are some concerns at that position in the future I agree, but it is our safety play that hurt us against LSU and A&M. Luckily the fix to our safety woes is likely already on campus in HaHa and LC but have just not matured enough yet.

Hopefully so. Our entire defense is gonna be younger next year. Could be a recipe for a few losses.

  • It's nuts how one guy can make such a diffrence but say Dixon did come in and play liek he was supposed to. This would be our depth chart going into Spring:

    CB
    Deion Belue SR
    Geno Smith SO
    Bradley Slyve rSO
    Maurice Smith FR

    CB
    Travell Dixon SR
    John Fulton rSR
    Jabril Washington rSO
    Jonathan Cook FR

That's 4 guys that could play if needed and that would push each other hard during the Spring to start. That depth chart has experience and youth. So basically, if we could get a JUCO CB to come in and take Dixon's spot it would be ideal IMO. But we have to find one...

  • A couple names to think about:

Cassius Sendish- We have signed a ton of players from Arizona Western C.C. under Saban (Jesse Williams, Trevell DIxon, Aaron Douglass) and he has the size we look for.

Lamar Robbins- Not a JUCO player but the kid has crazy potential. He might not be ready to step in right away because he is so raw, but I think he's worth the chance. Great player IMO and very undervalued

Jaylon Meyers (profiles on other sites, video below)- JUCO kid in Georgia. Has great size and speed. Was in great position to get an UGA offer but they got a few commits and that fell off. Might be a steal.

Just a few thoughts. We need a at least one more CB in this class ready to come in and compete.

  • I've seen a lot of poor tackling from the corners. Taking a lot of bad angles to make tackles. Specifically Milliner more than anyone. Safeties take way to many bad angles when the ball is in the air.

  • Our corner play hasn't been great, but our safety play has made the corners look much worse than they are. Lester has been a disappointment this year in terms of his reactions, and I am not even getting into Vinnie and Perry. If Vinnie or Perry play much next year, we are in trouble. They simply aren't able to cut it in space athletically. As a whole this year, our secondary has been slow reacting and even worse tackling.

My guess on next year's secondary in base:

    CB Belue
    CB Geno
    S Clinton Dix
    S Landon Collins

I think it will be interesting to see how Jarrick, Sylve, Washington, and Eddie Williams progress. I think Belue and Clinton Dix show great improvement in their 2nd year starting. We need to be much more athletic in the secondary next year.

I was more pissed about Fulton getting drug 5 yards every time he tried to make a tackle. Thought his coverage was ok.

But I guess the receiver had 35 pounds on him. Dude needs to get stronger, regardless

    This^^

I was at the game he wasn't lost at all. He just got beat a few times by a WR he couldn't handle physically. He also couldn't bring the guy down and was drug on several plays. He did get better as the game went on. He got some stops in the 4th quarter or we don't even have the last gasp chance that we blew in the end.

Haven't been following Geno in college close enough to know how he's been playing but at the end of the recruiting cycle, he was a "stock down" guy for me. Unless he's made big strides (which may have legitimately happened), I don't think Geno is on the same level as the corners that Bama has been rolling out there lately. I would say the same about Washington too. Never thought he was an Alabama level guy coming out (But i don't know how he's done since he got there).

It's not as if the cupboard is bare. Most teams would give anything to trade for Bama's CB talent but I do agree that the group doesn't look quite as imposing as the past couple of years. Bama is just working on a whole other plane of relativity than the rest of the country at that position.

Kareem Jackson was attacked and abused often in 2008. He looked great in 2009. Hopefully the same will be true for Fulton.

100% true statement about Bama fans. However, I refuse to acquiesce as I continue to be objective/truthful with my posts......pro or con.

In terms of CBs, I'm wondering if Saban's personality goes against the personality of most elite CBs as over the years.....many of the top CBs are flamboyant with a high "swag factor".

Tell people what they want to hear, they will like you. Tell them the actual truth...they may not.

  • Losing Dixon hurt. When Saban brings in a JUCO kid, he's legit. Dixon was no different. He was expected to start for 2 seasons.

Seems to me as good as our secondary plays under Saban, there are years when it's a major weakness. 2007, 2010, and now 2012 are bad. On the flip side, 2008, 2009, 2011 were lockdown and the best in the nation by more than a fraction.

2013 is looking like a season where the offense puts up great numbers, but the defense lets us down. No Milliner, no CJ, and no Jesse. Safeties will be young and inexperienced. The corner opposite Belue will be iffy.

My only hope is that Fulton grows up to the point to where he's not an All-American, but he isn't a liability either. We all remember Marquis Johnson. Dude got burned early and often until the suddenly the light came on. He shoved Spurrier's **** back in that night. He was never an elite corner, but he held his ground enough to not be a liability.

Jackson was a 2nd year guy that used to play RB in high school. Fulton will be a 5th year Senior. I don't see the comparison here.

    Fogtown

  • Marquis Johnson is a closer comparison than Jackson. Jackson was undervaled to me. Guy played so aggressive that he got beat some but he also made great plays and anytime he did get beat, it had to be a great throw.

Definitely think we'll need a CB from the JUCO ranks.

I definitely wouldn't disagree. Going into the year I thought that '13 would be our best year to get back to the BCS(not saying we still can't). It's just that AJ will be here for senior year and our defense will be so much more experienced. I'd really like to get Foster to pair up with Cooper. Howard is gonna be a mismatch the day he steps on campus.

I'm not so sure about that.

Safety play will be better at times, but you don't add 3 new starters in a Saban secondary and not see a drop off. Plus, who replaces CJ Mosley? Who replaces Jesse Williams?

'14 and '15 defenses will be elite, but I don't see the '13 defense being elite.

It could be, but we need some young guys to step up and play like they are supposed to. I'm worried about NG, CB, and JACK if we can't get Hubbard ironed out.

  • I pushed the JUCO NG all year now too. We are putting a lot of eggs in Ivory's basket. He's played well, but I'm not sure he is a big time starter. Missing on McCullers to UT last year hurt.
