Bama guys...quick question

  • When Jim McElwain left for Colorado State (or Memphis...whatever) was Burton Burns considered as a replacement before Nussmeier was brought in?

What's the story on Mike Groh? Seems like a crazy career path, but when Charlie Strong and Nick Saban both hand pick you, you gotta have something going for you, right?

And yes. This question is because we would very much like to poach more of your staff if at all possible.

    Thanks in advance.

  • I don't really think so. I never heard his name(Burns) mentioned as far as OC.

Mike Groh is our receivers coach. Don't really know what your asking about him. He's only been with us a year.

How many coaching spots do you have left? They aren't going to make a lateral move.

I understand he's only been with you a year. I am highly aware of his resume.I really don't understand how I was unclear.

We have 2 offensive spots ATM, w/ Craig and Gran gone.

    And those spots are?

I'm trying to answer your fvcking question. Being a prick about it isn't the way of going about getting answers.

If you have an OC position available then you have a shot. If they are WR and RB coaching spots then you don't.

If you want to promote one of our position coaches to coordinator go for it otherwise your out of luck.

Good thing for you with a Bama boy running your defense you might score more that 31 on a MAC team next year, we know your offense can't.

Roll Tide. Orange bowl will be full Monday night!!!

  • Burns is a career RB coach. I don't know him personally, but have heard that's all he cares to be. He's an amazing coach, but doesn't recruit. Would be utterly shocked if he left for any position, especially a lateral position.

Groh is a good WR coach.

    Burns recruits Louisiana.

  • If by "poach" you mean "promote" then I could see Groh going, yes. Burns, from what I've heard, is content as an RB coach.

If by "poach" you mean "lateral move" then no way in hell. coffee

^^this^^ LSU fans are well aware of Burns. He'd probably be their first choice to replace current RC if/when he leaves.

I'm simply saying that he isn't the same level of recruiter as someone like Pruitt or Thompson. Doubt he goes anywhere else.

Neither were considered for the OC position. Burns doesn't have the playcalling experience. Groh has experience calling plays and would have done so if McElwain would have left immediately, but is still fairly inexperienced doing so and was never considered for the job.

Saban really only goes for QB coaches as OC as well.

This is correct. Burns has done a great job as a coach for us, but he is not a recruiter. As a coach, here's his resume as far as his finished product:

    2005- Reggie Merriweather/ James Davis
    2006- Reggie Merriwaether/ James Davis/ CJ Spiller

    2007- Glenn Coffee/ Terry Grant
    2008- Glenn Coffee/ Mark Ingram
    2009- Mark Ingram/ Trent Richardson
    2010- Mark Ingram/ Trent Richardson
    2011- Trent Richardson/ Eddie Lacy
    2012- Eddie Lacy/ TJ Yeldon
