Beckman Gets His Man In Bailey

Illinois first-year coach Tim Beckman hit a home run on Thursday in landing one of the nation's top QBs in Bolingbrook (IL) High standout Aaron Bailey.

Hey Trojans, LSU's 74 are better than your 75.

  • whoa...didn't see that coming.

    Juice Williams part II?

Zook started off his recruiting at Illinois with a bang by getting an in-state 4* QB with tons of offers over bigger programs.

I think Beckman is a hell of a lot better of a coach than Zook. Didn't see this coming at all.

  • Damn, nice job.

I have said it for awhile, if Illinois could keep their talent home they would challenge for B1G titles. Reminds me of Georgia with how the top talent leaves the state.

Imagine if Illinois could lock down their own state this year. Bookend tackles Pocic and LTT, Guards Boesch and McGovern, RB Isaac, WR Treadwell, to go along with Bailey. I would be pissed if I was an Illini fan.

There's no question Illinois has to find a way to keep some of those guys of that caliber in-state. Beckman is an aggressive recruiter. I think he has to get off to a faster start in 2014. In my opinion, Clifton Garrett should already have an offer. They're going to eventually offer him anyways. Offer him now, get him to visit once a month if you can.

For sure, they have to get on that local talent first, don't let the big name schools get a head start.

Speaking of Garrett, Michigan was supposed to drop by his school this week. Do you have info on that or was that Brewster?

He told me Michigan and Vanderbilt were both stopping by. The coaches can't have contact with the recruits other than a quick hello, so not much to report on other than Michigan has the young man on its list early in the process. I know there is genuine interest in the Wolverines from Garrett as well.

  • Not really a surprise. Behind the scenes he has called U of I his dream school. Bailey is not your typical sound byte, blow hard recruit that says one thing and does the total opposite. He is a standout baseball player that gave up the sport this spring to work on improving his passing skills.

This is big for Illinois in a lot of ways. Too many other Big Ten rivals have come into the state and poached high end, BCS caliber talent. They can't change that trend over night, but getting a player like this helps them begin that process off the field.

  • Since 2008 Illinois has had the most first rounders taken from the B1G (5).

Consider they got two last night, but that's pretty wild when you stop to think about it. Wisconsin, MIchigan, Penn State, Ohio State...hell, even Iowa I'd have guessed before them.

Also shows how mentally challenged Zook was the last few years.

    True dat.

Urban won some MNC's with guys Zook recruited. No doubt in my mind Zook is an awesome identifier of next level talent and recruiter. The poor bastard is just the absolute worst game-day coach in the history of college football.

He's not head coaching material. Let's face it.

I think he'd make a very good college defensive coach and is an obvious recruiting asset.

  • Now Beckman needs to go after Pocic, HARD. Gotta get elite protection for your new elite QB, and keep some more talent in the state.

As long as Beckman stays away from Isaac and Treadwell then he can have Pocic.
