Best BBQ in country?

  • I hate all of you guys on here. I keep reading about all this great BBQ and can't find one decent place around here (Lexington KY)

Well, everynight when I get off work (3am) I drive by a bbq joint and can smell them out there smoking the meat. So tonight my gf and I go there to eat. I had high hopes. The fried catfish was ok, I make better though. The ribs were ehh, vinegar based which I don't care for but really not much taste other than that. Coleslaw was edible which is saying a lot for me bc im really picky on it. Potato salad would have been pretty good if it wan't full of pimento's. They had some really good homemade fries.

You guys piss me off with all of your "xyz is right down the road and makes the best bbq ever". I hate all of you!

  • A little hole in the wall in my area in Bluff City, Tn is a BBQ restaurant "Ridgewood". It's more of a tomato base BBQ. It's gotten national recognition from food network, CBS morning show, etc. Its also known for its baked beans also. Place is amazing. If anyone is in town for the Bristol race in a couple of weeks, you need to check it out. It's maybe 15 minutes from the track.

Ive seen a place in Austin called Franklins voted as the best in the country by one of the food magazines.

That was in Bon Apetite magazine and it is amazing BBQ. Only problem is, you have to get there at about 10 in the morning and wait in line 2 hours. They're usually sold out by 1. It's that good.

I grew up in orlando, and bubbalou's is very average. decent slice pork and ok ribs. It'd like a really good Sonny's.

I've never had 4 rivers, but if it's ran by johnny rivers, then it's probably really good. He had a dot in pine hills years ago that was awesome, but way too expensive for the hood.

Btw, you aren't a restuccio, are you?

    Boom.

Dreamland is for the masses but Archibalds is way better.

  • When it comes to bbq I prefer the process. Getting up early and spending a good part of the day preparing it. That said if I wanted to go a restaraunt I would say Phil's in San Diego or Hot Sauce William's in Cleveland. Would love to make it to Nashville, Memphis area.

  • Usually, "best BBQ" discussions turn into regional pissing matches. Almost surprised by this thread being somewhat civil.

Don't know how long ago you left Orlando, like seven or eight years ago Bubbalou's added pulled pork and baby ribs, both awesome. Their pull pork is as good as I've had, and I've had pulled pork in probably 10-12 states. Four Rivers is run by Johnny Rivers and they have unbelievable Brisket. You wouldn't believe how much business they have, they have a 30 minute line all day everyday. Really blessed to have them both in one city.

    Don't know restuccio.

And to start a nice flame war, I was through South Carolina, and was looking forward to some great BBQ. Left dissapointed...

  • One thing I've determined is that it is easy (quite easy) actually to make better BBQ than your favorite restaurant yourself. However, that they are able to mass produce with such consistency is what is impressive.

Best brisket I've had was in Texas.
Best ribs I've had (sorry KC) was in Memphis.
Best BBQ I've had was in Hemingway, SC. Sketchiest place I've ever been, but made it so much more rewarding.

  • I have two actually.
    Vans Pig Shack Norman, OK
Spring Creek Burleson, TX this one is a chain but have found the ribs to be better than the other locations.

  • I left about 8 years ago, but go back to see my dad at christmas. Bubbalou's isn't bad, just not great. I'm gonna have to check out 4 rivers. Johnny rivers it's a badass chef. I hated when his old bbq joint went out of business.

I've tried everything from there, since it was the only decent bbq around metro west. They have a good sweet sauce.

South carolina has great bbq, if you know where to go. I pulled into a bunch of different spots around upstate sc. The best i ever had was a dott in the hood near downtown greenville. Stone of the best chopped pork I've ever had.

Two ways to find the best places (though neither are 100). First, the best spots I've been to are only open during lunch. Usually because they don't need to be open all day. Second, ask a black guy. I'm not sure why, but it hardly ever fails.

  • Santa Maria style BBQ is unique to the central California coastal area and is pretty damn tasty.

As far as chain BBQs go there is one in So Cal called Chris & Pitts that throws out some good chow. Baby backs are especially good. A chain named Famous Dave's has opened a couple of locations out here and I thought it was really good.

Some Tuscaloosa BBQ facts to help straighten things out for visitors:

    1) The original Dreamland is still the original ribs. Do NOT confuse this with 'other' Dreamland locations. They didn't "expand", they have sold franchises that aren't the same company. Go to the original or don't go at all.

    2) Archibalds is fantastic. But again, the original only. If you go to the Woodrows & Archibalds, it's ok...like an airport burger is okay. It will leave you full, but you won't remember it. Some of the kids or nephews or something got together to capitalize on the family BBQ name, but it's just not the same. Go to the one on MLK in Northport...that has 3 stools...and you're golden.

    3) New place for me, but for pulled pork and BBQ chicken...my mouth is currently watering...go to Saws in Homewood. Obv not Tuscaloosa, but travelers often get here through B'ham. That place is goooood.

    Saw's is VERY good.

Buy a small pit and do your own. It's fun and it's better than any BBQ joint. I did a butt and some chicken Sunday and it was better than anything you can go out and buy.

4 rivers crushes bubbalous. The newer one on 50 moves pretty quick so the wait isn't bad. They also opened one in longwood and there's more coming. I heard he signed a deal for 14 restaurants
