Best Sandwich in America?

  • I've been watching the Adam Richman "Best Sandwich in America" series and I think he's nuts on a few of them but at least he stipulates that it's just his opinion. What are your top two or three sandwiches of all time? One of mine I listed on my weird combo thread but here are my top two of all time. I could easily go for some guft po'boys, especially at a place like Delmonico, but these jump out to me because they are so unique I suppose.

    Anyway, what you got?

1.) Pibil Tortia from Rick Bayless' joint in Chicago Xoco. As dumb as his fvcking brother Skip is, he is one of the best chef's in America.

description: strands of roasted suckling pig are served on crusty bread spread with black beans and achiote paste, then finished with a layer of pickled onions and habanero salsa.

2.) Fried Brain Sandwich from Hilltop Inn in Evansville, IN

description: Buttermilk marinated cows brain on a bun with simply mustard and pickles. Comes with other condiments but this is how they meant for it to be eaten.

Actually Philly has one of my top ten easily. It's a cheesesteak (kind of) but not from one of the real popular joints. It was at John's Roast Pork?

Any place in particular that you like. Hell I could have said cheeseburger as well but some are better than others. Hence "Best Sandwich in America".

  • If you haven't tried something from Zingerman's in Ann Arbor, then you are not qualified to make a judgement on the best sandwich in America.

    How good?
It was voted the best restaurant in Michigan and Zagat rated them a 27/30, calling it a "Mecca for foodies." If you're ever in Michigan, make sure to pick something up.

Never been to Ann Arbor but thanks for the heads up. I actually keep lists when I see threads like this and save them on my computer by state and city and try them out when I am in that particular area.

That jelly actually sounds delicious. I mean Monte Cristo's are pretty simple but that jelly might put it over the top. Anyone could really make a good one if they buy good ham, cheese and bread, BUT I couldn't make that jelly off the top of my head.

Would love to know the batter. I'm assuming it's not just the spices that he uses in it but he probably uses a different type texture batter than just using a french toast type like most do.

I'll stop though because I'm starting to get hungry and I only ate two hours ago. Would love that jelly recipe if he's willing to let you know it.

  • As an Ann Arbor native (born and raised), I find Zingerman's horribly overrated. The sandwiches are good, yes, but not worthy of all the praise it gets. If you're visiting Ann Arbor on a football Saturday, it's an experience to go to the deli and wait in line for a sandwich. I much prefer the deli's fresh bread and cheeses.

Anyway, before I die, I would love to smash a Primanti Bros. sandwich in Pittsburgh. If I'm ever on my deathbed in the hospital, I'd request it. Meat, coleslaw, fries; what's not to love?

  • The Triple Threat Pork from Slows in Detroit is better than the Yardbird, imo, which is on Richman's list of contenders. Triple Threat is on the left, Yardbird is on the right.

Primanti is good. I have been there a couple of times. Personally, my favorite (right now) is a little sandwich shop in Atlanta. Vermont Mustard Company in Vinings. My favorite is the Northeast Club.

Also, the big daddy at Momma G's is delicious as well.

Is Sanibel considered part of the keys? I thought it was off the west coast closer to Tampa then the keys

I did have a hog fish taco in key west once. That thing was awesome.

Dude, you got to try Jack's NYD. It's a couple miles from Vermont Mustard. Breakfast or lunch. Best fries in town.
