Best city in your state?

  • For SC, I would have to go with a tie between Greenville and Charleston.

  • I'm bias because I live near Canton and really like the area but I would have to say Columbus is the best big city in Ohio.

I actually grew up in Columbia, and moved to Greenville after I graduated from Clemson. And I would probably agree with you that Charleston is > Greenville, but Charleston is > than most cities.

srturf, have you been to Mobile? I've never been to Charleston but I've heard they're pretty similar with the oak lined streets and ironwork on the homes.

It just depends on what you like, I guess...I love Charleston, but I could/would never live there. I go there pretty often and get tired of it after a week. I love the Greenville/Spartanburg area (Spartanburg my whole life except a 4 year stint in Columbia woot )

These are my thoughts exactly. I love visiting Charleston, but after a week or so I've had enough.

Huntsville is definitely the "nicest" but for a 26 year old guy like myself I prefer the Birmingham suburbs.

Its been a few years since I've been to Huntsville. Mostly back in the fraternity days on brotherhood retreats and more recently, picking up fugitives. You can imagine the areas I've been to most recently weren't the best.

  • Just googled some pictures of Mobile. The older, dense areas near downtown look pretty neat.

You pick up fugitives? I bet that's crazy. And all cities have their bad areas. I'm sure Huntsville still has them. Whenever I go up there I'm usually in the downtown area, which is quite nice.

Yea Mobile has a pretty unique culture, lots of old houses and landmarks that remind me of New Orleans. It's a lot different from central/northern Alabama.

My dad was born there and my family is from Alabama. Love me some Mobile. Beautiful city.

Yeah, I own a bail bonds company so its either go get them or pay off the bond. I'm getting old and fat so I do a lot more hiring out than I used to. Your right about every place having a bad area. Seems like thats all I see. and mostly at night.

  • Chicago, Hands down, I live in Rockford the second largest city in Illinois and there is no comparison. I am not from IL but have lived in Ohio, Kentucky, NC, SC, and FL as well and Chicago is freakin' awesome especially the downtown area.

upvote for you sir. It has been a long time since I was there. All of my family moved to Birmingham (Inverness) back in the 1980's. Had some good times in Bama. I used to do my summer vacations at Lake Martin where my grandparents had a house there. They passed away a few years ago and my family sold it. I wish the family still had it so I could go back.

Thats a shame. Lake Martin is beautiful. I wish we had lakes like that down here. The gulf is nice, but fishing on a quiet lake in the early morning drinking coffee from a thermos; what else do you want?

  • Charleston is pretty cool, never been to Greenville but everyone I know that has been there has nothing but positive things to say.

For Alabama, I would say all around Birmingham. But people on this site will all say there hometown.

probably true. Actually, I was born in upstate New York and that is by far the most beautiful area I've ever seen. Around Stanford and Cobleskill. Birmingham is very pretty in the suburbs. My sister lives up there and I'm there all the time. Here's a pic of Birmingham. and a pic of Cobleskill. Its on the right.
