Best coaches of all time without a National Championship.....

  • Undoubtedly, number one has to be Bo Schembechler, IMO.

After that, I have these three in no order:

    Hayden Fry
    Frank Beamer
    Don Nehlen

    Who else do you have?

Bill Snyder is another very good call.

Alvarez as well, but I wouldn't quite put him in the same level.

    LScootU

  • Yet he still handed it to Woody during the 10 years war. goblue

Wish Bo was still around, his influence on kids even now can't be overstated. Just would be a great guy to have around the team and program.

Alvarez took a Wisconsin program that was nonexistent and turned it into a B10 contender. He made it to 3 Rose Bowls in 16 years (and won all three) during a time period when UM and OSU were otherwise dominant in the B10. If he coached at a better school or in the ACC or Big East, he would have a record comparable to Beamer's. In fact, he stepped down from the HC job right when he had built things up and firing on all cylinders. He easily could have coached another 10 years and might have come closer to winning a title if he had. He is the only coach in the B10 with a winning record against Tressel (3-1). I wouldn't put him on the same level as Bo, but definitely would put him in with the others. IMO not hiring Barry Alvarez when Lou Holtz retired is one of the biggest mistakes ND has made in the past 20 years.

That could be very true. Very good coach indeed.

Notre Dame has made a ton of coaching mistakes, IMO, including the last one.

  • No one has mentioned John Cooper. Also, not sure what the criteria is for making the list, but no mention of Chris Petersen or Gary Patterson either. ???

Agreed, they need to stop going for the "sexy" pick and get a guy who wants that job for the right reasons.

Kelly seems like a self serving jackhole, he didn't care about ND, just thought they were a good platform for increasing his reputation and profile as a Coach.

They need a blue collar guy, who gets and loves ND, and is willing to put in the work to bring them back.

The right hire is quite often an unattractive one at the time. Tressel, Carroll and hopefully Hoke. Guys who brought a proud program back to great heights because they genuinely cared and went to work without their egos getting in the way.

A bigger problem could be a lack of interest in the job as well.

When you looked at a USC, Alabama, or Texas that have had some down years before being brought back to the heights of success, you could always point to a solid recruiting base.

That isn't the case for Notre Dame. They have to hit on so many guys nationally because they just aren't there in the midwest, and the ones that are have grown up now with the B1G being bigger than Notre Dame instead of the other way around.

It is beginning to be a job in which I am not sure the administration has what it takes to make winning a priority anymore. If they want to sit back on their history and be pround of that, I am OK with that. There is a lot of rich tradition at the service academies as well and I enjoy that aspect of things as well, but if they want to compete like they used to, they need to decide what their priorities are really going to be and go with it. You have to change with the times, or you get left behind.

Among active coaches, Beamer and Snyder are #1 and #2. Mark Richt is probably up there.

In this day and age though, not many BCS conf. coaches last 10+ years anymore.

Michigan State does not and will not run the 3-4 defense.
