Better job, Ole Miss or Miss State?

  • Possibility that both jobs might be open at the same time if Mullen does actually get hired by PSU. They will have very similar candidates(Hudspeth, Fedora, Freeze). Which one would you take?

Good question. I think probably Ole Miss is the better job.

  • Ole Miss is also without an AD, I believe. I think I would choose Ole Miss too. I do know that MSU is working on some athletic facility improvements that might play a role as well.

    Big A

  • Anyone that has seen both campuses knows this is an easy answer. It's ole miss. Ole miss has the grove and it's where they redshirt ms America's. Miss st campus looks like its in a big cow pasture. With the right coach ole miss can be a good mid tier program. 7-9 wins per year.

Being a native Mississippian and having received degrees from both universities and having lived in both Starkville and Oxford, as well as having continued to return to both schools since graduating, I can not for the life of me understand why people would perceive Ole Miss to be the better job. To say that Ole Miss has better atheletic facilites is totally erroneous - bigger football stadium, yes, better no. At present they do have a nicer baseball facility but have a horrible basketball facility. Mississippi State has better practice and support facilites and all the other little things that support atheletics.

As to the campus of each university, Ole Miss does have the Grove, and it is truly beautiful, but once you leave the Grove, the campus really sucks. Taken in total, Mississippi State, in my opinion has the nicer campus and Mississippi State's campus in certainly better maintained.

Lastly, as to night life, bar scene, restaurants, cultural and religious events, Starkville and Oxford are comparable. The big difference I see is that Mississippi State, the city of Starkville and Oktibbeha County are no longer at odds all the time but are all working together to present the city, county and university in a positive manner.

Just one man's opinion but right now Mississippi State would be the better position.

    Isn't MSU working on a stadium expansion/remodel?

    Big A

  • yes, we are expanding stadium and remodeling it and completely bricking up the exterior and it is going to look great. after phase 1, it will expand about 7k and then after phase 2, it will seat around 75k or more.

  • as far as the two jobs

MSU - Great young, forward thinking AD that works great with all of our Coaches and President
OM - Awful AD in limbo with next AD being hired next year after head coach hire (who wants to take a job that doesnt know who their boss will be?)

MSU - Great young, forward thinking President that works great with all of our coaches and the AD
OM - awful president that almost everyone wants gone and has a noticeable disconnect with the athletic dept

MSU - Completely unified fanbase that loves the direction of the football program and every other program as well. And is giving a TON of money (even double what we were giving just 5 years ago)
OM - completely divided fanbase that is disgusted with all of the administration, and is giving absolutely NO MONEY to the university right now and the athletics sector of the university is actually hurting for money.

Tell me which job you would want?

    Yeah, looks decent.

  • it is also worth noting that the end zone bowl expansion is built structurally for a second phase upper deck above it

  • Ole Miss and it's not even close, IMO. At least they have some football tradition and the Athletic department and fan base is more strong than State.

    And I hate Ole Piss.

i dont have a problem if someone has an opinion one way or another but your points make no sense.

football tradition? yes they claim NC in the 50's but have been irrelevant for 50 years. Thats not to say that we have been a powerhouse or anything but we have at least won the West and been to Atlanta. in the last 60 years they have only had one 10 year period where they had more winning seasons than losing season. Again, i'm not saying that we are that much better but I'm just curious about the "tradition" you speak of

as far as fanbase being strong, thats where you are definitely WAY off. spend more time in Mississippi and you will see that

  • Mississippi St is the better job. Much more money in Starkville. State is the most popular school in Mississippi by more than most realize. Most of their sports programs are noticeably better than Ole Miss. Ole Miss is perceived by most to be greater because of tradition, Ole Miss just doesn't fund their programs enough to compete consistently. State passed them up during the 90's.

What we talking 1960's??Since 1991 when MSU started putting ANY cash into the football program...we have won more Egg Bowls been to 1 less Bowl than OM...been to the same # of NYD Bowls....been to Atl which OM hasn't....the enrollment is projected to be around 25,000 in the next few yrs(at 20,000 now)...OM is around 16,000...got a HC now making close to 3million...getting ready to start on a football only complex in a matter of weeks...and Scott Field will be at around 67,000 by the time USM comes to town in a few yrs....for a school that doesn't have a major city to draw from like OM does we do pretty damn good.

Our bball and baseball programs blow OM away...and most MS kids go with MSU over OM....since 1991 MSU has been gaining on OM in football...we've made our pass a few years ago. That school is a hell of a mess with it's football program...bball is a joke...baseball has had some goods yrs the last 10 but it took Cohen 3yrs to get as far as OM has in 10yrs...plus they haven't seen a CWS since what the early 70's!
