Big Ten fans. Over-signing

  • This is no flame but can someone explain to me the big ten's issue issue with the SEC signing up to 28/year. I have been told by a friend of mine from MSU that this issue is the main reason the Big Ten hates the SEC. He feels that there is an uneven playing field due to over-signing despite the fact that each team can enroll no more than 25/year and keep no more than 85 on scholarship. Also to understand not everyone who signs qualifies. Grey shirting is one reason most claim is unfair. With regard to grey shirt issue , that is a personal decision by the player. Meaning if the player really wants to go to that school he still can but may have to wait a year. Obviously a five star is not red shirting and I know at least at alabama that all grey shirts are told well in advance that his may be their fate in case they may want to go to another school. To note on the flip side schools could just pull the schollie instead of offering a grey shirt which could be worse if it was a dream of hat player to go that school. I know there is also a misconception that if a player doesn't make the two deep he gets offered the door. If a player is academically qualified, healthy and follows team rules he is not shown he door. Now if a player isn't good AND breaks the rules or flunks out then he obviously is booted. There are several players that almost never played but stayed on team and graduated under Saban.

    Please educate me if my understanding is skewed. Again this is not meant to be inflammatory but informative , so please leave emotion out of responses.

  • The issue is that some kids sign and think they have a spot and then get railroaded in the end. Or if they don't, someone on the team who isn't performing has a little sit down and is told that they can either be blocking dummies for the rest of their career or transfer. Although, that isn't exclusively a SEC thing, and the latter happens in all leagues (including the Big Ten). I just think it is crappy.

  • It allows you to exceed the 85 scholarship limit and have more mistakes and in turn find better players... I believe in the eligible classes Alabama had close to 20 more players signed than Notre Dame did.... That will give you better players for depth. It is simply a way to skirt the rules. So if you have 70 scholarship kids right now... well you get 15 ships. If in April 10 leave the team that sucks. Make it up next year.

    IMO a team should have a 75% graduation rate to play for a bowl and nothing greater than a 10% disparity in graduation rate from white to minority players.

  • Two years ago when OSU played Ark in the Sugar, they had signed 36 more kids in the four previous years. If you don't see how that tilts the level playing field, then I can't help you. Since it has at least become a mainstream issue, the SEC has slowed some. The stats were much more gaudy a few years ago.

  • Much of the oversigning problem would be solved with two things:

    1) 4-year scholarships for all NCAA schools.
    2) More oversight of transitioning players from athletic scholarships to medical hardship scholarships.

  • I don't have a problem with it, to be honest. Until the NCAA guidelines change, there's nothing we can do about it. Limiting schools to 28/year isn't going to limit oversigning, that's stil 112 scholarships a year. That's also the B1G's scholarship limit.

    The big misconception is that by oversigning SEC teams have more players on scholarship. There is no exceeding of scholarship beyond the 85 limit. Again signing doesn't mean they actually end up in the school. At least a couple per class will end up not qualifying. Again there is no skirting the rules. These are the rules. Also If a player is going to be a tackling dummy is it not important to let him know or is it better to lie to him until his eligibility is exhausted. To some being on the team and never playing is ok. To others they would likely want to transfer to somewhere they would likely play. also there are several players on many SEC teams that never play but stay on team and graduate. I agree with a standard graduation rate as the majority of Hesse kids will never play professional football and need not squander their opportunity.

  • Somehow us signing players who never enroll due to MLB or grades makes us evil. That's what I've learned. Those extra signees who don't make it into school give us a huge advantage.

  • I agree with you on the 85 man roster aspect. Where you dont get the arguement is your "tackling dummy" take on the players impacted by this. Sure, in some occasions these players dont live up to their side of the bargain physically (similiar to those who dont maintain their academic standing). In other occasions its nothing more than roster management by the coach.

    Would Texas A & M turn down the #1 recruit if he suddenly picked them... What backup rs jr cornerback would get a call into the office about a knee issue that suddenly impacts his future that wasnt an issue weeks before.

    I am not saying this is always the case... But its foolish to think someone isnt getting screwed in some occasions.

  • How many kids really have their schlorship pulled? The advantage is that it can allow for academically questionable players and big ten teams have to let one go. However, it isn't against the rules so I don't gt ll if the whining.

    Saban also leads the ncaa in medical redshirts. Why is that? I think he is forcing players out which allows him to circumvent the oversigning rules. Allows schools in SEC to make up for recruiting mistakes. How come Texas A&M has 34 recruits this year? Looks like they are following the sec way of unethical oversigning.
