That top 10-15 rated Michigan teams were coached by 2 star coaches in RichRod and Gerg. Look what happened when they were coached by 4 star (trying to be humble ;)) coaches this year.
Actually, look at Michigan defense this year, a Walk-on Safety, a Walk-on DT, and mainly 3 stars in other positions. I will check and edit it when I get home. Throw a better athlete in there with the quality coaching and you would expect an improvement.
Michigan State does not and will not run the 3-4 defense.

It's the same argument State fans make with regards to MSU, except sub "2-star" for 3-star and 3-star for 4-star in terms of the kids on the field. Just about all of MSU's current players are at least 3-star guys; only the 2008 class had more 2-stars than 4-stars in it.
Pretty much why I find it amusing that folks thing the Big 10 is going to go back to the Big 2 "Little 10" after 1 recruiting cycle.

I don't see it off of 1 recruiting cycle. Michigan and tOSU keep getting top 10 classes while everybody else is >20 each year and this conference will go back to what everybody except Michigan and tOSU fans hate, Big 2 little 10.
Michigan State does not and will not run the 3-4 defense.

One thing to consider was class size; tOSU and UM took 24 or 25 each, while Nebraska took 16 and MSU 18. Not saying that NU or MSU would approach top 10 if they took 6-8 more kids, but I don't think you'd see the disparity in overall rankings if the total # of recruits was equal.
Sure, if UM and tOSU bring in top 7 classes for 5 years straight and in that time no other Big 10 team brings in a single class ranked in the top 30, things will be top-heavy; the law of averages does favor the better ranked classes and when the #s are THAT drastic, then I'd say such a disparity is inevitable.
It'll be interesting to see how the 4-year schollies start to affect the programs.
