Bill Maher with dumbest quote of the new year?

  • PTCcock195 said...

Or it's that work is dignifying and he would have likes to afford less fortunate parents that opportunity, even if it cost more than welfare. That's what that quote says. You chose to apply the aforementioned negative context to that quote. I won't pretend to know why, I just thought it was interesting going beyond that statement was ok, but in Maher's case you chose to take a stand.

Again, how is work dignifying but raising children at home is not. Is there any way that work is more dignifying than being a parent?

I only took a stand on the Maher quote because it was completely out of context. There was no mention on how the subject came up and what it was over. Having seen the show where the quote came from there was a detailed discussion on how Ann Romneys situation in no way resembles what the vast majority of stay at home moms have to go through, especially single ones. In the Romney quote its entirely IN context and you can judge it entirely on its own merits.

  • For the 4th time, Romney didn't say raising children at home isn't dignifying, you're making that up as an assumption.

I watch Real Time every week and don't have a problem with Maher's quote, or Romney's for that matter. But if you're going to defend one quote vehemently as being taken out of context while distorting another to try to justify your opinion, it's not a very effective argument.

It's funny. He and I share sooooo many stances, opinions and even our so called conspiracy theories are the same I just believe in Jesus and he thinks I am some kind of pathetic a-hole for it. I have less a problem with him, actually none at all because he's just a person trying to stay relevant, and more with the hypocrisy of the left in attacking certain Republican talking heads and then acting like Maher's comments don't exist.

We almost need a pinned thread for arguments about the difference between being smart and being intelligent.

Maher is an intelligent guy, but sometimes he's not smart enough to keep his mouth shut about things.

That's the case for a lot of people in the spotlight.

I was jk. I do like him for the most part. His stance on religion sometimes annoys me when he totally talks down to anyone who is religious like they are an idiot. Im not even religious and this just seems too disrespectful sometimes. The big difference between him and O' Reilly, Beck, etc is that those guys are on a supposed "news" network. Mahr is on HBO and his background is a standup comic. But regardless, anyone who takes anything these talking heads serious needs to grow up and start making up their own minds on the issues. This whole right/left thing is really bringing down the country IMO

So are you willing to admit that Romney did say that working outside the home was more important than being a stay at home mom?

Can you see that in the quote, or is that just more assumptions?

It's understandable and deserving of as much respect as anybody else's opinion, but it just bothers me when people think certain people are dumb.

Guys like Romney and Obama are not dumb. They are very intelligent. They may say some very dumb things and not always do the smartest thing in certain situations, but unintelligent the two are not.

I don't know that dignity is the issue here. And frankly in terms of parenthood, mothers are always held to a higher standard and that is for good reason. Nobody wields more influence or is capable of fostering more success in a child than a mother.

As for Maher's quote......it isn't out of context when you consider his overall approach to "conservative" women. He has used language such as, "bimbo", "dumb twat", and "c***", when referencing Palin, Bachmann, etc. Is it really a surprise or off the radar for him to continue the rhetoric in reference to Ms. Romney? I don't think so.

Since when does having money exclude someone from understanding or living the experience of any other person, particularly in reference to the experience of motherhood? Does one judge a wealthy mother differently than a poor one? The hand that rocks the cradle rules the world whether money is involved or not.

Executive life, 9-5 work, managerial types, are pretty easy when compared to the responsibility of raising good citizens and young people.

IYAM, that has nothing to do with conservatives, but that Bachmann and Palin are bimbos and dumb twats and that's regardless of political orientation. Palin could be talking about hockey and still sound like a dumb bimbo.

It was a stupid idea by the libs to go after stay at home mothers. Overnight they lost the majority in that category and makes you look like an ignorant fool.

In the latest CNN phone poll (released today), 55% of women think Obama "is in touch with the problems facing women today," as opposed to 27% for Romney.

    Entire poll is linked.

Basically the whole Hilary Rosen & Ann Romney thing seems to have had zero effect whatsoever on voters according to polls. Not surprising.

    MildReTIDEation

  • Wtf how is this even a question?

No one is denying that taking care of a kid is hard, but almost 100% of parents ENJOY spending time with their kids.

    Let me ask you this:

At any given moment where would you rather be, at work or with your kids?

    Easy easy answer.

People who have jobs...their VACATION is spending time with their kids.

People are being guilted into picking stay at home moms in this thread iyam.
