Bill O'Brien gets a contract extension

  • He actually had a clause in his contract that gives him an extension equal to the number of years any sanctions would be.

    Thought it was pretty funny that a coach who hasn't coached a down got a 4 year extension and pretty smart by him. Gives him a better payout if he's fired and more security should he want to stay. Pretty cool, random contract thing that I've never seen (granted, not many coaches take jobs knowing sanctions are looming, wonder if someone like Golden has it in his contract).

    Golden was extended by the University when it was rumored that he was signed, sealed and delivered to State Pen.

    That would've been the most ironic twist of all time IMO.

  • Not a clause. He said on Mike & Mike it was "an adendum". This means it was added. He also said it happened recently.

    In otherwords, he was offered years to stay on. Related news - if he wanted out of his contract, he could do it and there is no way Penn State would challenge him. No way, despite the language.

    Never said it wasn't. Just saying, it's kind of hollow to call out PSU as "state penn" when there are major problems in your own backyard and have been for a while. But I'm also one who never used $ instead of an S in team names or said things like "scUM" because I think it's childish and you never know what's going on at your own school (as I found out was much worse than anything I would have expected).

    Why? He can leave at any time added for the same penalties as leaving before the time was added. There's literally no drawback to this. Either things work out and he stays, or they don't and he goes with no extra penalties. I know you hate PSU, but in no way is this bad for him.

I understand your situation is way different then our players being labeled as thugs though. So it will be harder to ignore it.

  • This is PSU strategy attempting to block the NFL from coming after this guy.

    O'brian is a really good coach and I always felt he knew this was coming - he actually has an easy job - PSU will start to feel the Sanctions in 2-3 years when the talent that graduates cannot be replaced effectively.

    When I say easy - I mean his expectation level cannot be set very high and he has legitimate excuses if he cannot bring PSU football back once the Sanctions run their course.

    PSU fan should be more concerned with the contract language that not many know stating his "outs" - cannot really see who would want to start a new career under these conditions if O'brian got an offer from an NFL team....
