Blanding goes in-depth on UVA commitment and FSU rumors

Virginia Beach (Va.) Bayside prospect Quin Blanding showed why he is the nation's top safety at the NLA 7-on-7. Prior to the event, Blanding talked recruiting with 247Sports.

  • I figured those rumors were BS but still, this kid made a terrible decision

Plenty of time to rethink things and take some damn visits son, the world is bigger than Virginia... trust me

  • Blanding, as always, was great to deal with. Kudos to him for being as candid as he was.

He's a special prospect, on and off the field and he will be a great ambassador for UVA.

He really wants UVA to be a successful program and he wants to be the reason for it.

At this time, he is very, very solid to Virginia and he doesn't plan on taking any visits. I think the only thing that could cause him to change that mentality would be a mass coaching change with the current staff. He's very close with these coaches. Unless that happens, I expect Blanding to sign with the Cavaliers.

  • Hopefully this turns into another V-Tech and Virginia flame fest.

  • I hear that and that is cool at the end of the day, its his choice

But UVA will never be a great team, and he is just too young and stupid to realize it imo

They can't even beat Beamer during his worst season in decades

    I got you.

Blanding seems like a great kid, its a shame to see him going to play for a pee-wee team. It'll be interesting to see if he sticks with the committment when London is canned and Tom O'Brien takes over. Regardless...he'll never beat VT, but surely he already understood that.

Mass coaching change? They just brought in 5 new coaches, how does he love them? He was packaged and mailed to UVA, along with a few other kids. Not a terribly big deal as they will continue to blow asshole with London at the helm.

Blanding is a beast though, he would be good no matter where he went.

Your pics get me so weak lol. But I agree to an extent. UVA might be decent at some point. It just won't happen any time during Blanding's tenure at UVA, or any time close after.

  • If this was a situation with VT I would understand, but UVA is a burning dumpster fire of a program. A new coach can't come in and say he will turn it around. Then after three years go 16-19 (4-8 in the last season) with another 4-8 season likely next year.

UVA is showing how pathetic they are just holding on to him, if they had half a football brain they would have released London and hired O'brien as the head coach when they had the chance.

I think they have to clean house after another 3-9/4-8 season this year. I really think he might open up his recruitment again. But I don't really care Marshall is just as good IMO and we can find another playmaking safety who is a little bigger.

This might be right from the outside, but it's just not what is going on. I might be proved wrong, but our coach will be given enough time and he has provided major talent upgrade. We will not be particularly good in 2013, could be pretty decent in 2014 and if things go well could be upper tier ACC in 2015. I know that means nothing to you FSU guys, but if we can pump out 8-4, 9-3, maybe 10-2, attract VA talent (while offering great academics) we will have happy people all around

But this is all a crap shoot imo, and that is just stone cold facts

Clemson continues to recruit better, and FSU as well

Even when you out recruit VT you still can't beat them, and they will be better next year

Then you have a wild card in Miami, a program that if they escape the NCAA... well, UVA won't be competing with them either

So you be fighting UNC, NC State and teams like this for at best 4th place in the ACC and a maybe 2nd or 3rd in your division alone

And don't forget Louisville joins the party in 2014, good luck I guess... I don't see UVA leaping any of these programs cause of a few 5 stars

oh i agree..but our expectation isn't being number 1-3 in ACC consistently..if everything goes perfectly we win ACC, but going 8-4 like in 2011 is a good outcome. And we will continue to pull in the occasional 5-star who wants to stay close to home and wants the academics. We do have the facilities and resources to develop these guys into NFL player as we have proved with the Chris Long's of the world so they will continue to come to us here and there. 2014 sets up nicely for us too with all the talent in VA so we could be looking at a few good years if things go well, but I don't think we will say that we would be like FSU every year and have a shot at the national championship game, we just don't have the depth for that

Looking at your schedule for next year I see 4 wins if you guys are lucky?

It has been three years and London has had one season over .500, our coach came in and is averaging over .750 and our fan-base isn't happy with him. If he goes 3/4-8/9 next year will he stay HC?

You guys have definitely upgraded your recruiting from the later Groh years, but Groh did the same thing when he first came in and never won the ACC and beat VT only once. You are getting some good players, but London has to prove he can coach them up and beat people with those players. So far those results are less than steller. He claims to have won a National Championship at Richmond in FCS, and he was their coach then (first of his two years), but that team had 15 redshirt seniors that Dave Clawson recruited and coached up. Almost anyone would have won with that team, so that result on his record, while he uses it in recruiting, should have an asterick by it. With all of the recent coaching changes and UVA's conservative approach to head coaching changes (along with a pretty patient fanbase, with limited expectations like you) I think London gets two years to turn it around. If not he is gone. Fall completely flat on your face next year with a 1 or 2 win season, and that may be it, with O'Brien in the wings.

Kezki, you may be right for all I know but London is far from proving he's capable of leading your program or any D1 program at this point. It's obvious to most everyone the decision to hire O'Brien and Tenuta was forced on London. And, it brings in a legit head coach if London get's the boot. O'Brien is a safe choice as a head coach and he would provide the football program a guy who could step in, do a decent job but not be around too long given his age.

With the coaching overhaul that just took place, London's job appears to be safe in 2013 barring a two win (or less) season. However, 2014 will be the determining factor. I would think, unless London wins 7 in 2014, he'll be gone no matter the recruits he's brought on board. London's always been a great recruiter but he's not being paid to just recruit. Of course, in order to be successful, he's gonna have to relinquish some decision-making starting with who will start at QB. I see where Watford is number one on the depth chart.....I guess it's to provide some motivation to Sims. In any event, with Lambert, Sims and Watford all vying for the job, I've got my popcorn ready to see how this plays out. For your sake, TOB will whisper in London's ear to make a decision and stick with it....something he's not been able to do up to this point.

If UVA ever takes football seriously, they could consistently compete for the coastal. I don't see what GT, UNC, or Va Tech has thst Virginia doesn't, other than bigger commitments to the sport. So much talent up there...teams like FSU really shouldnt be in the mix at all, but we are. Consistently.

Get off the pocketbook. Hire a bigtime head coach. Profit.

2 years ago they had a lacrosse game followed by their spring game. About 10,000 attended the lacrosse game, around 1,500 attended the spring game. They also sold coupons for 4 tickets, 4 drinks, 4 hotdogs, to home game for $72.00 in ValPak coupon books.

What about the above makes you think the UVA admin or fans will ever take football seriously?
