I would go with Payton. Did everything that a teams asks for in a back. Hard nose runner, breakaway speed, great out of the backfield in routes, and was a ferocious blocker.
Sanders was a special talent, but had a ton of negative plays and was stopped all too often in big games. He wasn't great at 3rd and 1 either. He was probably the most entertaining back to watch though that I have ever seen.

You guys aren't helping my case (cept for rollbama)
I'm on Sanders' side.. His OLine was absolutely horrid and a lot of times he would make the opponent miss and turn it in to a big gain.. And he still averaged 5.0 yards per carry with that OLine which is amazing..

Walter Payton. He is the greatest to ever walk on the field. He was fast, strong, agile, tough, and above all had more heart than anyone besides maybe Dick Butkus. His was the offense on his team(so that doesn't work in Sanders favor as much as people want).
He ran like a man possessed and its a shame he had to die so early.
Lebron James will never be as good as Michael Jordan, thus we should get rid of his nickname, "The King".

He played eleven years before having the luxury of running behind even a single pro-bowler. If this is based of stats alone then you would have to include a couple other backs who were probably even better...

Sure, Payton was more complete. But Barry was so good at his style of running, that makes up for his lack of whatever doesn't make him "complete" imo.

Barry Sanders is the greatest college RB that I've seen live and on television.
Walter Payton is the greatest NFL running back I've ever seen live and on television. Growing up a Viking fan, no single player worried me as a fan that Walter Payton.
