The men were part of a larger group of 34 who were killed when a huge Allied shell exploded above the tunnel in the Alsace region of eastern France in 1918, causing it to cave in.

It was supposed to be: Yes. How are things going for him?
Because 'Wie' is 'how' and when speaking to someone of your own age you can say 'Wie geht's as in 'how are things going?' or 'whats up?'
But I tried to take the polite form of 'you' (Sie) because I was referring to your uncle.

Meh, it all depends on the tone in which the language is spoken.
I feel like german gets a bad rap because of all the World War movies where Germans are shouting or angry.

Ever been to Germany? That's just how they sound even when they're drinking and happy. It's scary, but you get used to it.
