Sports Illustrated has a piece today abt bowl games and the lack of attendance. Of course, next year we start the playoff system, but attendance was brutal for most all bowls this year. For example, Sugar Bowl attendance was 54,178. This was the lowest since 1939. Many threads on here mocked attendances, but most every team faced a decline in bowl attendance/ticket sales.
Maybe one way to fix attendance is to do away with conference affiliations. If a team "always" goes to a bowl, say SEC to Sugar, then that diminishes some of the luster of attending that bowl. Maybe an alternative would be more regionalized bowls: say a team from the east coast only goes to a bowl east of Mississippi River or along those lines. This might make travel more conducive to the economy and travel times.
It seems that programs are accepting the fact that tickets sales are a thing of the past (en lieu of television deals and conference payouts to compensate.
There could be a number of options to help boost attendance. Any ideas on what might help boost attendance and/or spice up the bowl games?

The two biggest things I see with this post are this:
1. The Rose Bowl would never agree to end conference affiliation. This has always been a HUGE obstacle in football postseason. And now the Sugar Bowl will match it, pairing an SEC team with a Big 12 team.
2. With TV coverage getting better and being broadcast in high definition, combined with rising ticket prices, consumers are more inclined to just stay home and watch the game from the comfort of their home.

Although attendance dropped by 2,114, the Rose Bowl had the highest attendance of all the bowls, including the National Championship game.
Also, of all the bowls, the Rose Bowl is the only one that has not had one hint of scandal or corruption attached to it. Those that govern it, receive the lowest salary of all the bowls.

For perspective's sake:
The two largest bowls in terms of stadium capacity are the Heart of Dallas Bowl and the Rose Bowl. Heart of Dallas Bowl capacity: 92,100 Rose Bowl capacity: 91,136
Then there is a HUGE dropoff in stadium size. The next bowl in terms of capacity is the Cotton Bowl, with a capacity of 80,000. For reference the Orange Bowl capacity is 75,540, which was also the site of the National Championship.
