Here's all I can find so far, from mlbtraderumors.com...

"Derek Lowe isn't concerning himself with trade rumors and is even making light of the Tigers' interest in him, writes Carroll Rogers of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Rogers speculates that the Braves could move Lowe to clear salary for a big-name hitter."

  • Tigers Interested In Derek Lowe
By Mike Axisa [July 16, 2011 at 6:50pm CST]

The Tigers are looking for starting pitching, and that search has led them to a native Michiganite. Detroit has expressed interest in Derek Lowe according to Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports, though the two sides have not yet had any serious talks.

Money could be an issue for the Tigers, as Morosi notes. Lowe is owed approximately $6MM for the rest of this season and is under contract for $15MM next year. That said, the prospect cost would be much less significant than it would be for someone like Ubaldo Jimenez. The 38-year-old Lowe has a 4.30 ERA in 113 innings this season, though he has his highest strikeout rate (6.5 K/9) in four years with his typically high ground ball rate (59.9%).

All things being equal, Morosi says Detroit would prefer to add a left-handed starter to a rotation currently lacking one. The Braves would be able to use any cash savings towards adding a hitter. These two teams have gotten together for a number of trades in recent years as our Transaction Tracker shows.

  • The Braves are in search of a bat, but Athletics outfielder Josh Willingham isn’t high on their list, a source told Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports (via Twitter). Earlier today, ESPN's Buster Olney wrote that Willingham "is going to be traded at some point".

  • The Rays still could end up as sellers but right now they appear to be buyers as they were looking to get Francisco Rodriguez before the Brewers swooped in at the final hour. If Tampa Bay sells, it's doubtful that they'll move any of their starters but B.J. Upton is another story. In theory, the Nationals, Phillies, and Braves could all be potential destinations for the outfielder.

Would do back flips in the street naked if we could somehow pull Upton from the Rays.

  • I'd like to have Upton. The Braves would inherit his $4.8 mil salary and he will be up for arbitration next year.

KC is wanting to get trade Alex Gordon and he would be a major upgrade over McClouth in LF. Gordon would become an unrestricted FA after the season and we could probably sign him $3-4 mil.

Here is a good site to judge salary vs players output.

I’m told that no offers have been made yet, either by other teams for Lowe or by Braves for a bat. But interest in Lowe is there from Tigers, for certain, and perhaps at least one other team. Teams including Braves still kicking the tires, figuring things out. Could be another week before anything happens. But we’ll see. Sometimes offers get juiced up and things happen quicker than expected.

Probably won't have to worry about it anyways, I seriously doubt the Braves will make a run at getting Upton. Hope I'm wrong so I can go out and learn how to do them. lol

  • And don't forget the Braves can't add payroll, so someone has to be dumped.

I was reading about Lowe on ESPN Rumor mill, but this was the link they were talking about.

Where are you getting that? Someone will inevitably dumped because there will have to be a piece included in any trade, and I'm sure they'd rather it be someone who costs money as opposed to a young talent like Beachy... but I don't think payroll is going to affect us from making a move whatsoever.

Everywhere. Everyone knows the Braves can't add payroll, they are owned by Liberty Media. It's been since the Turner days that the Braves could go out and get whatever they want. Now if the Braves wanted to trade for a high price player, they will have to have the other team pay most of the salary...and of course that would come at the expense of Brave prospects.
