Braves fans let's rate our four future HOFers

  • 1. Maddux
    2. Glavine
    3. Smoltz
    4. Chipper

I have them in that order with a large gap between Maddux and the field. Though there should be a gap between Smoltz and Chipper as well. Thoughts? I'm a little irritated by the talk of Chipper being the greatest Atlanta Brave ever. He is fourth in this era.

  • 100% agree..

Maddux is arguably top 10 all time RHP. He is night and day ahead of the other 3..

  • I think most of the talk of him being "the greatest Atlanta Brave ever" comes from him being with the team for his whole career. Granted, the other three played the majority of their careers in Atlanta, but Chipper Jones is everything Braves baseball and the fans love him for that. Take a man who is a clear HOFer and has played his whole career in the same city, and the fans are going to go nuts for him. In terms of best baseball players on that list, they are numbered correctly. But in terms of greatest Brave ever, it is fair to throw Chipper to the top of the list in my opinion.

I'd out smoltz ahead of glavine for two reasons...his post season record and the fact he went from starter to closer and was dominant at both

Kind of agree. When Smoltz was at his best as a starter he might have been the best and nastiest pitcher in baseball. Guy had incredible stuff. My question is why is Smoltz a lock HOFer? I'm not convinced he is. Glavine has the wins so I can see that one but I'm not seeing Smoltz as a lock without seeing the numbers(which I admit I don't have a full grasp of as I post this)

It's easy to forget glavines 20 win seasons and Maddox still being the ace of the three with his 80mph fastball

  • Smoltz will probably be the most divisive of all the Braves up for HOF, IMO. He is also my favorite Brave of all time and I'm still upset that the Braves let him walk away for the amount of money that they did. He 213 wins and 154 saves though his success as a closer is probably more beneficial to his HOF numbers even if he was a starter for those three years. He would average around 15-17 wins as a starter though his arm probably wouldn't have allowed it at the time.

  • Smoltz is one of the best post-season pitchers of all-time. He was 10-1 at one point. I think he finished like 12-3.

Maddux and Glavin actually had losing records in the post season. Schilling was probably the most dominate post season pitcher I can remember but Smoltz is up there.

  • Chipper played every day. Pitchers came in once every 5 days. In addition, he played his entire career in Atlanta. That makes him the greatest Brave. Smoltz is right there. That being said Maddux is the best player the Braves have EVER had. He had the best career. But he won a CY w the Cubs I believe. Dude was filthy and it was fun watching him set hitters up.

If you include the time the Braves were in Milwaukee then you'd probably have to say Hank Aaron as the best Brave ever.
