Breakdown/Ranking of The ACC's Most Valuable Programs

  • Cliff Notes...

Ranking (# is times greater/less than the median ACC team)

    1) FSU (1.88)
    2) Clemson (1.58)
    3) UNC (1.44)
    3) Miami (1.44)
    5) VT (1.33)
    6) Duke (1.04)
    7) GT (0.96)
    8) NCST (0.94)
    9) UVA (0.90)
    10) Maryland (0.88)
    11) WF (0.45)
    12) BC (0.42)

    From the article:

    Some interesting observations:

-Duke is roughly equal to the median level in the ACC for two reasons: (1) exceptionally poor football viewership; (2) majority of basketball's value is realized in post-season play which is not included in this analysis

-Boston College is very poorly represented because data is pulled from the 2011 season; BC football and basketball were both very bad last year

-Florida State's league impact on television in 2011 was likely greater than the combined impact of Maryland, Wake Forest, and BC across basketball and football

-The impact of FSU and Clemson is almost equal to the combined impact of the five lowest ranked teams in the ACC (BC, Wake, Maryland, UVA, NCSt)

-Despite message board rumors, it doesn't look like NC State would be a very attractive pick up in the short term for the SEC as it doesn't command a whole lot of viewership relative to its ACC peers; the same could be said for GT.

Is FSU Really The ACC's Most Valuable Team? - Tomahawk Nation

I've been a long-time reader of Tomahawk Nation (among other SB Nation sites) but decided it was finally time to make things official and get an account. I've taken quite an interest in the ACC/ESPN...

Well, I believe it's based on viewership numbers in football and basketball (what the networks care about) from 2011. Clemson probably got a boost by winning the ACC and leading the division most of the year.

Overall, I think Clemson and UNC are probably interchangeable as 2/3.

UNC could pay their way into the Big Ten. Clemson does not. Different conferences have different revenue models. This person did not account for that.

    Yes, I agree with that.

However, I think the point of the article was looking at it from the network (ESPN, ABC, FOX) perspective. That's what will impact TV contracts and how valuable each ACC team is in that regard.

I doubt the TV networks (including the BTN) contracts care how much money UNC has vs Clemson in regards to "buying their way in" a conference.

To the conferences, that may play a roll as far as helping with conference buyouts, etc. But, again, this is more of a network perspective for TV contracts.

  • Ever since the ACC-ESPN contract was finalized, FSU fans have been touting their "value" left and right. I wonder why that is. panic

Bottom line is being number one on this list is like being the tallest midget. Forbes just released a list and no ACC team appears on it. This Tomahawk nation study is flawed any way. It only uses one year's worth of data. Thats hardly enough to justify "value". But FSU fans have been linking this all week to make themselves feel better for being 10 million in the red in their athletic department.

Miami is by far the biggest TV draw... whether it is bc of hate or love.

    Not even close.

Obviously, it is very close. And, you're not taking into consideration basketball at all. Who watches Miami basketball?
