B(u)y the numbers: Draft by state

A geographical breakdown of where the NFL draftees came from -- and how that jives with where the colleges sign their recruits.

    Paul Strelow

  • Interesting that florida tied with Texas and had more than california drafted, but both those states fans complain when a florida player is rated higher than the player from their state.

  • The Cali prospects will be much higher next year. For example USC is loaded with junior prospects.

Florida has a lot of players coming out next year too. Hell FSU will have a few players that came from the state get drafted not including Greg Reid(Georgia), EJ Manuel(Virginia) and Tank Carradine(Ohio)

  • Doesn't Cali have the most players in both the NFL and MLB? Most schools West of the Mississippi depend on this state.

  • This is a great read, which is obviously not a surprise. One correction is that USC had 3 players drafted, not that it really matters.

    Thanks.

Three players drafted, but two from Cali (Kalil and Ellison). Nick Perry is from Michigan.

  • Surprised that AU doesn't do better considering they're in a talent rich state like GA. lol

  • Good breakdown, Paul. Always interesting to see how the numbers shake down.

Big Ten's struggles versus SEC is largely due to the speed in the front seven, especially the D-Line.

    AGREED 100%

We do have speed at the skill positions ( OSU Anyway). Look at Ginn, Gonzo, Saine, (now) Smith, Brown, Fields. Problem is we lack the speed on the DL to get to the QB and Can't block the DL from SEC schools. Florida's DL killed our OL in NC and dictated the game. For us to compete for NC ( the whole B1G) we need to recruit Big Fast kids from the south. NO DOUBT about it.

S&C programs seem to be a lot better in the south as well...Aside from bama, most SEC defenses sacrifice size for speed which really helps against the spread

Only a moron would draw long-term conclusions based on a one-draft-year sampling.

So all the other years when CA is atop you ignore .. one season with FL at the top and it's case closed?

  • One thing that California is different from Floria and Texas is...football is not the athletic god here.

Lots of great athletes from California chose other sports...and as I've said before, the fact that three of the California PAC schools hold the top spots for most NCAA National Championships confirms that data.
