B(u)y the numbers: Early commits

We know more prospects are getting recruiting earlier these days. But here's a look at a few 2013 trends regarding who's committing, from where and to what degree.

  • So, anyone else have theories on why California kids have been much slower to commit?

  • JMO but the pressuer to commit in the SEC early is greater due to the coaching staffs. Out west it seems the coaches don't mind if a recruit chooses later and seems to hold more spots for kids. SEC seems to say either get on the train or you won't have a spot here.

Maybe most Cali kids have more schools to choose from unlike other states

I would agree with this thought

  • It appears as though our staff learned its lesson on NSD '12, where we left waiting at the altar with a bunch of big name kids. This year they're taking a different approach. They're accepting commits from kids they deem good enough by their evaluations & treating the big name NSD kids (Tunsil, Adams, Hargreaves, Alexander, etc) as +1s.

I would agree with this ... think in general, the intensity of recruiting in certain geographic areas is heavier because there are more major programs and arguably greater fan interest.

  • Interesting stuff.

  • The positional breakdown is very interesting. Michigan basically only has WRs, DTs, and DEs left to recruit, and they are the most abundant. percentage-wise, at this point.

  • There is virtually no community pressure to sign for the western kids. In Alabama it's Bama or Aubie for the top kids or there's pressure from friends, family and neighbors. It's a whole different vibe out here, you just want a top California kid to come to your school or at least stay out west but there's no ostracism if a kid goes back to play at UF or Okie. It happens all the time.

This. When was the last time you heard a kid from California get the Joe McKnight or Fred Davis or Kyle Kalis or James Wilson treatment? Football isn't life in California. If a star leaves the state or even the region, big freaking deal.

  • Honestly, getting commitments are nice, but all I'm interested in is where they sign. My school has been burned by its top commitment the past three recruiting cycles. It doesn't look like it will happen this year, but you never know with 16-17 year olds.

I do covet EE's though. I hope to get plenty of those.

Exactly. Outside of maybe USC, most fans don't know who the recruits are on the West Coast. However, if you have 20 kids visiting a Bama, OSU, LSU, etc game on an official visit, alot of fans will know exactly who the vast majority of them are.

In Vegas, we actually have good HS baseball and basketball. Its a foregone conclusion that the elite ones are leaving the state. Because of that, its easier to wait on committing due to no pressure.

  • Also, if the kids from GA don't commit to an out of state school early, then they might have to go to UGA.

  • Not counting USC most of the Cali kids have farther to go for visits. We've only had 1 Cali kid visit thus far Aaron Cochran. Max Redfield, Hutchings, Vanderdoes, Cravens, and most other kids visit later in the summer or have to wait for official visits before visiting ND, UM, BAMA, Florida school, LSU, and guess we can add tOSU to the list now. I think west coast kids have more attractive options than in the past in the PAC-12. Between the new coaches in the conference, the resurgance of USC and the additional schools of Colorado and Utah, there are more options for West Coast kids than in the past. JMO.
