A look back at how coveted the top pro prospects were coming out of high school.

  • Interesting that nearly all of these guys were rated three stars or higher. I've been on a crusade about the value of three-star prospects and every year, the data reinforces that.

    Bingo.

I will say I hadn't realized Fletcher Cox came out with four-star billing.

If you go back and look at Ohio's 2009 class -- wherein Kuechly was No. 37 -- there were 16 four-stars, none of whom I immediately identified as having sterling college careers.

  • Above are the names we all still recognize.

Sorta interesting to see which highly rated prospects don’t have the pro stock to match their college stock (to put it mildly).

Here’s the national top 10 for the draft-eligible classes:

    2008 (Scout)
    Terrelle Pryor (2011 supplemental 3rd-rd)
    Da’Quan Bowers (2011 2nd-rd)
    Julio Jones (2011 1st-rd)
Darrell Scott (Colorado RB transferred to S. Florida, could be late-rounder)
Arthur Brown (current Kansas State LB via Miami)
Will Hill (Florida S not selected last year after early entry)
Justin Johnson (Oklahoma RB transferred to Abilene Christian, not expected to be drafted)
    Patrick Peterson (2011 1st-rd)
    Tyron Smith (2011 1st-rd)
    A.J. Green (2011 1st-rd)

    2009 (Rivals)
Bryce Brown (Scouts Inc.’s No. 24 RB this class, likely undrafted)
Rueben Randle (LSU WR could slip into 2012 1st-rd)
D.J. Fluker (Alabama RT is a 2013-2014 early round prospect)
Sheldon Richardson (Missouri DT will start this year after being a reserve last year. Redshirt junior spent first two years at juco)
Matt Barkley (USC QB will likely be a top-10 pick next year)
    Trent Richardson (2012 1st-rd)
Russell Shepard (LSU QB recruit converted to WR, backed out of early entry decision, not viewed as a high pick)
Devon Kennard (USC DL/LB started 5 games last year as a junior)
Vontaze Burfict (Talented but troubled Arizona State LB whose stock has plummeted for character concerns and reported failed drug test)
Jelani Jenkins (Fla. LB fared well as a redshirt sophomore starter last year)

  • Justin Johnson is a shocker to me- I thought he would be a big-timer.

  • Ranking high school players has always been a crap shoot and always will be.

"I've heard some of our fans say, 'We were always an SEC school. We just didn't know it," athletic director Bill Byrne said.

  • I love this analysis. It's amazing how many of the "can't miss" recruits well "missed".

One out of the top 14 (Richardson) expected draftees was considered a top 10 recruit out of high school.

I'd like to see what happened to the top 20-25 recruits nationally. How many are out of football, didn't pan out, or what round they were drafted.

    Again, thanks for the analysis.

  • good stuff to look at.

  • Chandler Jones, somebody dropped the ball off the statute of liberty here.

  • Doug Martin was the 2nd of 2 RBs selected in the 1st round and he was a 2 star by Rivals. As I've stated before, too much emphasis on "combines" and "measureables" and not enough on film when assessing RBs.

Still LMAO that Thomas Tyner is still a highly ranked RB for 2013 due to measureables..Definitely doesn't play elite competition. Seems like a good kid but he is injury proned which is NEVER good for a position that takes a lot of hits.

Tell people what they want to hear, they will like you. Tell them the actual truth...they may not.

He has great bloodlines to with his brother being a DT for Baltimore and his other brother being Jon "Bone" Jones
