Having bred and shown dogs for forty plus years, there's not a bad breed of dog. It all depends on what you are expecting from your pet, your lifestyle and how much time and energy you want to put into your pet.
Be aware that GSD's are super dogs, but they are very protective of their family which can lead to some problems for childrens friends and parents of said. They also shed reallly, really bad so be aware that there is more grooming to them than you'd suspect unless you donn't mind hair all over your house.
Goldens are incredible dogs but be aware that they take a long time to mature and their puppy and adolescent require a lot of patience as they are big enough to get into everything but too young to understand anything.
While a lot of guys don't think they'd like a poodle, a standard poodle makes a really great family pet. They are quite large, have great temperaments and are smart as a whip. Easily trained as they have been bred for generations to respond to humans.
Pit Bulls are really a generic term for a certain type of bull terrier. One of the neatest breeds is called a Miniature Bull Teririer. Cute rascals and smaller than the larger Bull Terrier (which is a recognized breed by AKC in its own right.)
