By "you guys" I meant people who get defensive when gun control is mentioned (Which is pretty much everybody who is disagreeing with me in this thread. Admittedly, my original comment was "snarky.") I wasn't stereotyping people who own guns, just the ones who are politically zealous about the issue.

And do your really think "Get out of here, negro! You can't vote!" is the same as "Sorry sir, we're not allowed to sell that gun anymore, please choose from any of the other 300 models we sell" ???

    You ARE stereotyping.

And yes both of your examples are violations of one's natural rights.

You just don't get it. Probably never will. Good luck with that.

    EQUAL violations?

Not sure what you are getting at. You seem acknowledge both are violations, but you contend that one is not "that bad" of a violation.

Whether you go 20 MPH or 40 MPH over the speed limit, it's still against the law.

You're saying "They can vote, but why do they need to sit in the front of the bus?"

I was conceding, for the sake of argument, that the gun thing WAS a violation. My point was to rebut your original argument that the people participating in this protest against small gun control measures are similar to people fighting for voting rights. They're not.

And I don't think banning a certain type of gun is a constitutional violation at all. Heck, even Justice Scalia's 2008 decision that held for the first time ever that the 2nd amendment is an individual right, rather than a militia right, admitted that the government can validly ban certain types of guns. (Yes, that's right, the 2nd amendment didn't protect an individual right to have a gun until 2008 and was never interpreted to prevent actions by states until 2010).

How the hell am I supposed to defend my family if I don't own an M16?

You better hope it's an A1 because the A2 used a 3 round burst. I'm pretty sure you can defend your home with a smaller weapon and your 2nd Amendment rights won't be violated.

  • What the anti crowd either is missing or ignoring is the fact that with the exception of the shooting of Rep. Gifford in Arizona since Columbine all of these big news events have taken place in 'Gun Free' zones. The shooting in the Portland mall last year was actually stopped by a CCW that was taken in the mall by an individual ignoring the gun free sign at the mall entrance. 2 people were shot dead and the killers weapon jammed by the time he had cleared his weapon he was left with the choice of surrender, deal with return fire or commit suicide, he chose suicide. By FBI estimates 1 million felonies are stopped or prevented by legally owned firearms every year and 98% of the time those legal firearms are not discharged. The right to life is unalienable as is the right to self defense a furtherance of the the right to life. The gun is the great equalizer. It makes the 120lb woman equal to the 250lb rapist, the 80 year old equal to the 20 year mugger and it is much faster than 911.
The concept of the 2nd Amendment came from people who had just secured their freedom from an oppressive government and was actually intended to insure that if the need arose the people of the new country would once again be able to defend themselves from the next would be tyrranical government. Depending on which estimate you want to use in the 1900's between 100 to over 200 million people were killed as a result of gun control by their own governments hand (China twice, Cambodia, Rwanda, Germany, etc). Gun control only works for those that get to keep their guns (criminals aren't too likely to be turning any in) and the 2nd Amendment is the only insurance that any of the other amendments are respected. If we want to ban firearms there is a way, it is a Constitutional convention, it requires 35 states agree to hold and 3/4 agree to change any part of the Constitution. Any other means is anti-Constitutional and seditous.

  • Nothing is ever going to get better because all anyone wants to do is fvcking argue. People on one side of the fence want to talk gun-regulation, people on the other want to talk 2nd Amendment. Sure, both will throw out that other things matter, like mental health improvements, promoting better parenting, etc., but they only say those because they feel they "have to." And we have a situation in this country where we need to have a discussion about what we can do to help curb these deadly shootings from taking place (I've stated numerous times it starts with un-taboo-ing mental health problems) and all anyone wants to talk about is their right to own (or not own) an AR-15. Quite frankly, I don't give a sh!t about that issue right now. You're worried about government regulations or civil liberties or whatever, I'm worried about kids feeling unsafe in their fvcking middle schools. THAT'S the issue we should be talking about.

Amen. People just accuse both ways instead of a reasonable discussion of how to fix this mass shooting problem we have in this country. Any attempt at civilized conversation turns to crap in less than a minute, and a few days later there's another shooting.

There's a major problem here, and many people think the only options are to keep or get rid of the guns. It's childish to think there are only two solutions to the problem like this.

  • sf2 I agree on your mental health point for the record. And from one Bama fan to another hopefully you can take what I'm about to say with a grade of saw.

The thread was created to notify board members that an organization was trying to put together a rally to inform state representatives of their concerns regarding the 2nd Amendment and attempts at violating the Constitution.

  • Just so you know, there is no reason to march on the Capitols. You can simply call your state representative and they will make note of your views. If enough in their district express these views, they will act/vote accordingly. This marching stuff is just a dog and pony show. Use the phone and enjoy the day doing something else.

We typically "blow a fuse" because we are dealing with ignorance.

    1. Gun show sales are subject to background checks just sales in gun stores.

    2. There is already an assault weapons ban. Semi-automatic rifles are not assault weapons.

You really don't know much about this subject. If you'd like to understand here's a video that explains assault rifles vs. semi-auto:

What assault weapons ban is there now? The ban introduced by Senator Feinstein in the mid 90s has expired.

  • MrBlonde said...

Guns are already regulated. Off the top of my head...

    I can't own one if I'm a felon.
I can't own an assault rifle.
    I can't carry a concealed firearm without a permit.
Even with a CWP I can't carry in tons of places.

Gun owners are saying that's enough.

Please give me examples of government regulating free speech and freedom of religion to that extent...

I wouldn't really call those stiff regulations. And again, the ban on assault weapons has expired.

And let me guess, you think you should be able to carry a gun in a bar, right? Makes sense, I guess. After all, alcohol causes conflict and gns resolve it.
    Pure genius.

Free speech is limited. For example, you can't yell "FIRE" in a crowded movie theater. It has to do with public safety. Kind of the same way gun regulations have to do with public safety.

  • We could start teaching children/young adults, and even grown ups what the Bible teaches about not killing people. How bout mandating bible study in all schools? That could help IMO, parents are clearly not doing a good enough job.

Sorry, but separation of church and state is also in the constitution. There is nothing wrong with teaching some principles in the Bible in a non-religious way.

The first things we need to do are:

    1. Remove this taboo we have as a society of addressing mental illness and issues.

    2. Tell people with problems that it's okay to get help.

    3. Tell their friends and family to not sit idly when you know they need help; reach out to them.

    4. Stop letting it be okay for people to make fun of and bully those that are different, especially when it comes to mental issues; it's 2013, it's time for us as a society to grow the F up.

    5. Stop referring to them as psychopaths or crazies or weirdos and not take the attitude that we need to "get these people off the streets;" obviously that attitude does apply to some people, but we need to try and help people before throwing them in some jail or camp. We're not animals, we're human beings.

Good points and not to argue you points but to give you a picture of what you're up against:

    1. Its not a taboo, its that society doesn't care...most of the mentally defunct in this country live under overpassses out of sight of society or institutions. The gov't argues its their civil rights to do so and the truth is the money and resources don't exist to help them so out of sight out of mind.

    2. Absolutely assuming they realize they need help.

    3. The Newtown shooter's mother was working at clearing those hurdles when he killed her. Big time effort required to institutionalize an adult if they haven't exhibited a clear danger to themselves ot others.

    4. I think there is a concerted effort at stopping bullying, at least I hear a lot of commercials on the radio against it.

    5. See 1. Almost all mentally ill are not a threat and for the most part unless there is a family effort they are ignored.

There isn't much that can be done before a clear threat is established and there does not seem to be any attention paid to the mentally defect until there is an actual event. I do agree with your points but it seems that it just sits too far down on the priority list with anyone that has the authority to effect a change in the status quo. Its much easier to deflect and blame guns. That way you can split the sides and never come up with an effective solution as that would require effort and $$$. Just for the record the worse school massacre in this countries history did not involve a firearm and on the same day as Sandy Hook a mentally ill man killed more children in an elementary school in China with a knife.

  • this isnt anything new. its just another tool to keep everyone's focus off the big picture.

    1. lets try puting the entire welfare nation to work at their local public works dept (in order to recieve the check)
    *either get a job
    * or powerwash & paint every building in town,40-50 hours a week ("make America beautiful project).
    2. quit spending trillions over seas (so-called war & other)
    3. put the troops that return home on our southern border (eliminates another issue)
    4. 10 % flat tax (lower taxes = more spending = revenue gain)
    * if the Govt guru's cant make the buget work on an annual basis , fire them like any other working US citizen would be at their jobs.
    5. drill for oil in our homeland ($2 gallon would also help the economy)
*why drill offshore ? their is more oil in the NW US than in Saudi (fact).

bottom line : fix the Fing budget & border and worry about guns, global warming,"Squatting" on Wall Street, & misfit ragheads at a later date.
