CFB Teams that can not win it all, regardless of the coach

They wont out recruit us, nor will they ever finish higher than us.

They have been out recruiting you for the past three seasons, one in which their recruiting coordinator was poached weeks before signing day.

One is the new stadium/facilities they just built, and the fact that tedfords contract will be up soon. Once that happens they will hire a better coach with the new PAC money and their program will soar. Nebraska has nowhere to go with no fertile recruiting base. They're basically on the same level right now with Cal having 1000x more potential to be great.

Never, ever assume your team will make a good coaching hire. Especially one who will be better than the guy he is replacing if he is replacing a coach widely considered "good". Odds are, at best, 50/50. 25% is probably more realistic.
A great coaching hire is almost luck.

Did anyone know Jim Harbaugh was going to be a great coach? Has Brian Kelly been any better than Charlie Weis or Weis much better than Willingham? Les Miles has been amazing at LSU, but is he better than Saban? There are 50 schools who would love to upgrade if they knew they could. But they don't know.

And they're still a 7-8 win team. Also, you make it sound like they were doing great until they hired Tedford and he screwed everything up. He's the best coach they've had in my lifetime. Where is it guaranteed that if they replace him the next guy will be better? When was the last time they had a better coach than Tedford?

No, they haven't. 3 years out of 5 since Bo has been with us, we have recruited better. And we are way ahead of them this year.

It doesn't matter what happened in the 80s and 90s. Cal is a great school sitting on some of the most fertile recruiting ground in the country. Nebraska might be a blue blood, but sitting in the middle of nowhere without a Tom Osbourne/Chip Kelly type of innovator will make you mediocre.

10, 11, and 12 they finished higher than you in the rankings.

Also, it's July. We are behind Texas A&M, penn state, Washington, Auburn, and south Carolina...all of which won't be close to us when all is said and done.

Again, that's just talk. While Cal has been invisible forever Nebraska has been kicking butt. And not for just a few years, but for decades. Also, if being located in Cali and having great academics was the key to winning championships, Alabama, Oklahoma and LSU would be SOL. When Cal actually wins something, let us know. Until then, it's just another middle of the pack program that elite programs beat up on each year.

    2011: California 15, Nebraska 17

I know you're not trying to bring USC into this conversation so I'll disregard the UW line.

Agreed, Cal is sitting on fertile recruiting grounds, but those recruits have a ton of other options also, USCw, UCLA, Oregon, Stanford, Washington, ND, and out of conference powers that poach top talent.

Good try but you cant use 247 rankings in 2010 or 2011. This site wasn't even here.

    2010
    Cal 11 NU 22
    2011
    NU 15 Cal 17
    2012
Cal 23 Nu 25 but we had an higher average.Which i go by more because it doesn't factor in the # of commits.

Whatever, two of the last three if you use rivals.

  • Does it really matter? It is clear by now that neither Tedford nor Pelini will lead their respective teams to a National Title. Both schools could win it in the future. But it would depend on who is hired next.

Agreed then, CU can't recruit right now. I don't see it changing anytime soon, you dream that it will.

I think CU could easily recruit at an elite level if they string together a few winning seasons. CU is a destination school with decent academics and a beautiful campus.

I doubt either is coach capable of leading their team to a conference title.

Cal? Cal will be 2x the program as Nebraska moving forward. Huge recruiting base with the best public school in the united states. Cal is a sleeping giant, which isn't really sleeping considering the talent they put into the NFL.

when is cal going to wake up?

three ten win seasons in 60 years
zero conference championships in 50 years

cal doesn't care enough about athletics to ever win it all. and they're in a conference w/ two programs who do, so it's always going to be an uphill battle.

    Texas A&M

correct answer. all the elements to win - large, dedicated alumni base w/ money, smack in the middle of one the most fertile, high quality recruiting grounds in the country, but they will find a way to f*ck it up. zero top 5 finishes since world war 2 - even when they were cheating their asses off. and now, they have cut off their nose to spite their face and won't even compete to win their own division.

    roger huerta

  • colorado is another good answer. not important enough at that school. at all. students don't care, alumni don't care, school sure as hell doesn't care.

    roger huerta

  • I think any public university in a big 5 conference could win it all if they had a tremendous coach and got some lucky breaks.

If Nick Saban went to washington State tomorrow, they would be competing for BCS bowls within 3-4 years. With luck maybe they'd win it all.

Enough to draw out of state kids from their home states? I don't see it. Enough to keep their limited talent home? Not the last couple of years.

Because the last couple of years have been CU's worst years in the history of our program! Damn dude, do you not get how big of a trainwreck Halk was? We had the talent to barely compete in the MWC last season. We started offensive players in the secondary for gods sake because Hawkins didn't really recruit in 2009 or 2010 or 2011 and the players he did get (Scott, Kasa, etc) have pretty much all left. We have had nothing. Nearly 50% of CU's student population comes from out of state, with damn near all of it coming from California. I really don't think you understand how bad it was under Halk.

You're right on one front, the higher ups don't care. Having said that, Benson is old and about to retire. DiStepheno is wishy washy but in the end I think he really wants athletics to be competing for titles (he finally said it late last week) and Bohn is finally getting support from him (the new basketball facility and the upcoming football facility and Folsom renovation and seeing the good that the basketba;l program did for the university when it's not our main sport). CU fans are getting vocal about it though with a regent election coming up that will play a big part in our future.

Saying the students or alumni don't care however is flat out wrong. Look at our turnaround in basketball on both fronts. The students right now, don't have much interest because we haven't been good, but it was the same thing with basketball a few years. A few years ago, you could show up at a basketball game 10 minutes after tip off and count the number of students that were there. Last season, our student section was packed and made the top 10 for student sections and made The Pit in ABQ feel like a home game for us against UNLV and Bailor.

Thanks for going into detail on that , doesn't change the fact that the state of Colorado is limited quality wise for athlete's and they don't have enough prestige to outrecruit for out of state talent.

I guess those top 10 rankings when we were good means we can't draw kids out to Boulder. Man your logic is flawless, it's like talking to a wall. You are oblivious to any point brought up to counter your horribly weak argument. Check the CU teams in the 90's, they had a lot of Colorado kids on them starting as well as California kids. Hell, nearly all of our best players have been from California.
