CFB Teams that can not win it all, regardless of the coach

I guess those top 10 rankings when we were good means we can't draw kids out to Boulder. Man your logic is flawless, it's like talking to a wall. You are oblivious to any point brought up to counter your horribly weak argument. Check the CU teams in the 90's, they had a lot of Colorado kids on them starting as well as California kids. Hell, nearly all of our best players have been from California.

I don't think he's old enough to remember when Colorado had as much talent as anyone. Athletes from Cali, LA, FL, and here and there. Great setting crappy support from the university. Joining the P12 should help change that. Colorado could return with the right backing and coaching staff..I don't see Hawaii winning one.

Oh I remember watching the 1991 Orange Bowl., I just don't see it happening again.

As stated over and over, forever means Florida Atlantic could win one. I am looking at the foreseeable future, and I don't see Colorado or Florida Atlantic winning one.

I try to pick teams not in fertile recruiting grounds. They are sleeping giants, imo.

  • how is colorado going to hire that coach when they don't pay their coaches? embree is the lowest paid coach in the p12 @ $725k/yr.

to put that in context, the next lowest paid coach in the p12, mike riley at osu, makes twice what embree does.

For starters, Embree took a very big pay cut to get top quality assistants in. Second, at the time Embree was hired, we were paying off the Big 12 exit fee, Halk, and Barnett while getting no money from the conference. And honestly, what has he done to deserve a lot of money? Right now he is just a unproven coach. When he wins, he will get paid a lot.

  • honestly people are using Wisconsin as an example of how it can happen, but as a huge fan I have to be honest and say we are almost on the other side of the argument. We have been enjoying a lot of success over the last 20 years or so, but still haven't been able to level up so to speak. Winning it all is hard even for the best teams in the country let alone teams working with inherent obstables.

We have administration/university dedicated to winning, fantastic fan support, great academic institution, fun campus, no rivals within the state, winning football, etc.. The one thing that will always hold us back is that our state produces 2 maybe 3 elite prospects per year. Maybe 6-10 high D1 prospects per year and most of those are on the lines. When we try to search nationally or even within our region the two things that recruit against us are the cold and not having the history of other programs. We will steal a few here and there, but overall it will always be hard for us. Some of it is our own doing by who we accept and go after, but as a fan I would almost rather have it that way as opposed to selling our soul. Which is what i think we would have to do to win it all.

It all come down to recruiting.

cu has never paid it's coaches.

dan hawkins' base was $900k/yr w/ $600k in incentives - 2nd lowest in the b12, w/ only iowa state's paul rhoads earning less.

gary barnett's base was signed at a base of $710k/yr and was somewhere around $1.6m total comp (and incentive heavy) when he resigned.

neuheisel went to washington because cu wouldn't pay over a million.

Wisconsin was a fluke hail mary from one loss and the BigTen title. They would have made the "Final Four" had it been in place and had a shot. They were that close and it could happen again.

That's quite odd seeing as how McCartney was the highest paid coach in the country at the time if I remember correctly. Slick didn't deserve $1M, which at the time is huge and Halk didn't deserve a dime.

I get that part of it. Hell you could say we were 2 hail mary's and a fumble away from a perfect season, but at the end of the day good teams don't let that sh!t happen to you. It may be possible, but only if everything falls into place. Maybe the only thing that stopped us last year was a lack of a pass rush (JJ Watt declared early) and corner play (recruiting and injuries). We may never be built to overcome that.

I think it would be almost impossible to build elite consistency in Madison, for just the reasons you've mentioned. But consistently good and occasionally great is possible and in process. It does take a lot of luck for even the elite teams. Southern Cal only won it all once.

Michigan State, Saban couldn't even win there.
    Minny
    Iowa
    Washington state
    Cal
    Purdue
    Indiana
    Illinois
    vandy
    Boise state

Cant believe im going to defend spartan nation, smh. The university was not on the same page as the football program within, not even close. I believe, a big part was an inept AD, that refused to change things for the better of the program. That was the main reason saban left

It's too early to tell but I believe so. At the very worst, he is upgrading the talent in a major way so if he doesn't work out, the new coach will have something to work with. Embree has a vision, he knows what he wants to do, and he is recruiting those kids that can do it. He had a talk with Harbaugh sometime last year (maybe when he was hired, can't remember), but he asked how he did it at Stanford. He said get kids that fit your system, leave and breathe football, and are coachable (paraphrasing). So far, he is doing just that. We probably won't see many results this year (we are going to be playing at least 75% of our 2012 class), but in 2013, we will return nearly everyone so that's when we should see results and will be able to accurately judge him.

And let me ask you this, what have (did) Slick Rick, Barnett, Halk, and Embree done to warrant a big pay day? Slick inherited a Ferrari and left a Toyota Camry. Barnett built it up to an Audi that worked for a few years then exploded. Halk got a Camry and turned it into a Camry that is horse powered. Embree has the task of building a new car by hand. If you were running a business, would you pay someone large amounts of money for not succeeding? When McCartney won, he got paid. Tad Boyle will get paid because he wins. And Embree will get paid *when* he wins.

And then they would have been beaten in probably the final 4 game or definitely the championship game and still not have won a NC. Wisconsin just can't find the athletes on defense to compete for the NC imo.

There's a few, but not enough and the others (including myself) aren't vocal enough about it, and that needs to change ASAP. It finally looks like our admin is making changes, so I'm hoping for the best.

we have many athletes on defense. the difference is the holes and injuries. Kind of like the chain and the weakest link thing. We always have a solid base with a couple of stars, but there are one or two parts which prove to be our achilies heal. This year may be the best defense we have had as a whole, but there are still a couple spots that may be adequate at best.

Who knows. The program's in sh*t shape, so it'd take some time even if Saban came in. Last fall, we didn't have enough DL to play DL, or DB's to DB. Talent not withstanding, we didn't have the bodies to line up with people after a handful of injuries midseason. It'd be hard to say anything either way till 2014. Embree's got a plan at least, which I can't say for Hawkins or Barnett.

Richrod destroyed Michigan, Hoke is one of the best paid coaches in the B1G, and Mattison is the highest paid assistent.

True in your current case, so far. But if money were the deciding factor, hiring new, legendary coaches would be easy.
