Caleb Henderson

  • Where is this kid's offers? The 247 staff seems to think very highly of him, but his offers are: Michigan State, Illinois, Maryland, Marshall, Old Dominion, Virginia and Va Tech.

Pro-style QB in a talent-rich state, highly ranked, reasonably well known at this point, has camped at multiple places.

So what's the deal here? Staff?

  • There aren't that many big time schools anymore than are going after the pro-style quarterbacks compared to 10 or 20 years ago. Also, most schools only take one quarterback a recruiting season so it's pretty risky to offer a quarterback before he's even completed his junior season of high school.

I'll grant you those points, but at the same time if you look at other kids, both last year and this year, they're getting offers this early. Even/especially pro-style QB's.

I can understand a program like OSU not offering because he doesn't really fit what they do. But there's plenty of schools who could/would use a top pro QB. Heck, he camped at PSU and we've seemingly not even kept in contact with him. Instead, we offered some relative unknown in Clayton Thorson.

I'll be honest, I haven't watched Henderson's highlights, but I remember people discussing that he was fairly mobile. He's not exactly Drew Bledsoe in the pocket.

Is it possible he hasn't reported all of his offers?

MSU writers have been on commit watch with him for a couple weeks.

Certainly possible. I'm not disparaging the kid. Just wondering why the offers don't match the rating.

I know, I read the articles from your site. Seems like a very good get for you guys whenever he commits.

This is an adjustment we are all going to have to make with ranking prospects earlier. There are going to be times when guys have no offers when we rank them and schools want to get a look at the players in camp, etc. In other words, the offer list isn't always going to add up when ranking prospects this early.

Henderson also transferred high schools this past season, so in all honestly some recruiters may be having trouble finding him.

Another thing to consider is that quarterback scholarships are limited, so programs have to be picky. They can't go offer 15 guys publicly anymore because you will scare some off and end up with none.

There is no doubt, though, that Henderson is an excellent quarterback prospect and deserving of his ranking. He's got size, a big arm, is smart and while he's not a blazer, he's athletic enough to do some damage in the run game.

  • MSU's DC, Pat Narduzzi, was college roommates with Henderson's dad. He's built a good relationship with Henderson. But interestingly, Narduzzi is a hot name for some coaching vacancies. Stay tuned for some possible plot twists...

In looking at the other 2014 quarterbacks, you'll quickly see that there are very few quarterback offers going out. There isn't a single quarterback who has an impressive offer list, including the top rated quarterback in this class. In this case, it might work out very well for Michigan State in that they have next to no competition to land one of the top quarterback prospects in the country because they're willing to risk an early offer.

I think we'll see quarterback offers explode after the season ends and all of the junior season film begins to circulate.

This might be a reason, from spartan tailgate yesterday. Sounds like his credits did not transfer, so he has to take some summer classes. Last paragraph in the article, for those who can view it.

    Saw that, interesting.

Also realized that not as many schools had put out QB offers as I thought had done so. For some reason I thought a lot of the big schools had offered 1-2 QB's, but I took a look and didn't see as many as I thought.

I think he's stated that he's a huge tOSU fan, but that tOSU isn't looking for a pro-style QB under Meyer so his chances of getting an offer from the Buckeyes is very slim. I'd assume that he'd be a Buckeye if offered though.

Michigan State does not and will not run the 3-4 defense.

He runs good enough for our offense IMO. I don't think we offer, and it pisses me off. I hope he stays in the B1G, I think this kid is legit.

  • If Henderson is as good as advertised, then MSU should be worried about a commitment anyway. His recruitment reminds me a bit of Jayme Thompson (think that's the kid's name). Seemed sick of the recruiting process and committed to WVU really early. Then, as soon as he got the offer he wanted (OSU), he flipped immediately. Not saying that will happen, just what it reminds me of.

And yeah, I actually don't see OSU offering. But if the Alabama's of the world come calling, would be interested to see how he handles it. Some kids stick when you don't expect them to, some don't when you do.
