Car Suggestions?

  • So, i think i have unfortunately decided to sell my truck( 05 ram 1500 4x4) due to the drive to work (about 50 miles round trip a day) and gas growing so high. I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on some gas efficient cars. mainly mpg hwy. My price limit is 20,000 maybe a cpl more if i have to. Im looking heavliy at the kia optima. I know their past rep but im hearing all good things about this car and the new kia's. So anyone got some suggestions?

Personally, I just got a new car myself in May. Kinda the same situation, wanted to get better bang for my buck with gas prices going through the roof and needed a nicer/newer car for the type of work I do. Lucked out and got a 2010 Acura TSX with 4K mi on it for about $24,000. I know its a little more than the $20k but best purchase I have ever made. I'll make the extra $4,000 back in 2 years with all the driving I do at 31 mpg instead of the 23 I was getting prior.

  • You can get a new Camry for around 17K. After a trade in your payments wouldn't be bad at all and you wouldn't have to worry about a car for at least 200K miles.

Ill have to check that out. I get a whopping 13. like 5 miles to the gallon so its hitting my pockets for at least 80 a week right now just going to work and straight back home. dont wanna see how bad it is when gas hits $5

  • When looking at midsized sedans two years ago I settled on a Nissan Altima. Ford Fusion would have been my second choice. MPG in all the cars in this class are going to be pretty close to the same. One of the deciding factors for me was that I could get the Altima in a 4-cylinder that out performed the Fusion in a 4-cylinder so I wouldn't have tworse gas mileage of a Fusion with a V6. If you truely want high gas mileage then go even smaller, start looking at the Focus or Civic or Cruze. Plus you are much more likely to find a car in that class under 20K. You will be hard pressed to find a new mid size under 20K out the door. I don't care what the ads say, that's all bait and switch.

Check out edmunds.com for car comparison numbers, that's where I did most of my research.

Well at one point her brake lights wouldn't come on at night very dangerous at right now her brake lights stay on when she has turned the car off and kills her battery sometimes the gas pedal doesn't work you can push it to the floor and the car doesn't respond just frustrating little things but I do love the satellite radio in it haha

  • For me, I'm a domestic buyer and am currently looking at the Malibu and Impala to replace my gas-guzzling Trailblazer. I would also consider a Ford Fusion or Focus.

However, if I could break down my anti-Japanese car stance, I would buy a Subaru in a heartbeat. I used to manage a Subaru dealership and those cars are built to last. Safe, durable, excellent resale value, and they've come a long way in style.

  • ford fusion is one of the best midsize cars on the market, pretty good gas mileage they are nicely equipped and should be able to pick a new one up in your range.

  • I like the Ford Fusion 33 mpg (mid-size) and Honda CR-Z 39 mpg (compact)

Is funny how I am the polar opposite. With all the foreign cars made in Alabama I try to always buy their cars. I would never buy an American car since they snubbed our states for so long......except American trucks. I would never buy a foreign truck. Too feminine.

my wife had an 09, which is the first year of the new body style. you could definitely get an 09 for 20 or probably a little less. they are great cars (accord just with a few more bells and whistles and acura badging). if you dont care about that at all, go wtih a camry or altima or a base accord

thats the main reason i got it because it was a year after the new model (usually all the kinks are out by then) and it had a honda engine which lasts forever. plus for a 4 cylinder has some nice pick up. when i first got it i was going 90 and felt like i was going 40.

if you've got 20k to spend and want a nice car that still gets good fuel, go look at a used Lexus ES

can get a 3-4 year old car with 50k miles or so around 20k and youve got a luxury car that gets around 30+ on highway

my father in law did that, worked out nicely for him

Buy an oil well to go with it.

My daughter's used a quart of oil every 1,000 miles. The dealership said it was "average oil consumption". Any VW built in the last 30 years is crap IMO.

  • I bought a 2010 Fusion SE with sunroof and 45,000 miles for $14k last week. It's a good looking car, plenty of room for a big guy, and gets 30+ mpg if I drive sensibly. Very happy with my purchase at this point.

There is no way you are getting a TDI Passat for anywhere near $20k, good luck finding one for $25k. In your situation, the Hyundai seems like the obvious choice; cheapest, most fuel efficient, great warranty, and the reliability reviews for contemporary Hyundais is very good. I'd test drive an elantra first. I drive a Nissan pickup so I don't have actual experience with any of the vehicles.
