Carl Lawson- Rodney Garner

  • Does anyone know the reason Lawson is so adamant about not playing for Gardner? Why he basically hates him? All these people keep posting they know why but won't say. It's bothering me. Somebody post the reason if you know please.

I heard it was because Gardner never gave Carl a look or anything while he was at Georgia.

He refused to actively recruit Carl. Carl grew up a UGA fan and dude wouldn’t give him time of day. It wasn’t until two months after he committed to Clemson, they even gave the man a call. I think Garner also gave reasons why he wasn’t being recruited and Carl took them as a slight.

  • Hmmmm, maybe you guys are right. But a few were saying the reason was why UGA didn't even bother to offer or recruit Lawson.

  • Carl didn't fit into Grantham's 3-4 scheme that well.

  • First off, Carl did not grow up a UGA fan as was stated above. His dad played at Georgia Tech. He just said that to make UGA out to be the bad guy when UGA didn't recruit him. There was mutual disinterest throughout the process.

He doesn't really fit the 3-4 that well, but I still think UGA would have went after a guy that talented. He could have played somewhere. It seems like there is something else there, but I don't know what it is. Garner ultimately made the call not to offer.

  • Not sure why, but Garner is really tough on his players.

It sure seems a lot of other 3-4 teams are recruiting him. Is he just not athletic enough to play standing up? He's exactly the same size as Jarvis Jones after all.

    Jarvis Jones - 6'3" 226
    Carl Lawson - 6'2" 253

Your = you are. Stupid. You're is possessive hence the apostrophe. Duh. Ro' Tide!

  • UGA has him at 241, now, 4 years after high school. As a senior in high school he was 226.

Lawson after he gets in a college wight program will be in the 275-280 range.

Not saying anything about whether he could play there or not, just stating that their physiques are not the same.

shrug We recruited Ray Drew who was 260 in High School to play LB. He is now 295 and at DE.

Good, our players need it... Maybe he'll run a few off while he's at it.

247 lists Lawson as 6'3 245 and Jones as 6'3 241. Obviously I can't confirm either of those, but Jones sure seems bigger then that to me.

Of course, none of this changes the fact that there's nothing about being 6'2 253 that precludes a person from playing 3-4 OLB.

At the same age, they were different body types. Carl is a stockier, thicker guy. I think Lawson could play standing up in the 3-4, I kind of envision a James Harrison type. But Lawson looks like he's more likely to be a 270-pound DE than a 245-pound OLB.

You can't honestly say that Lawson would for sure jump up an extra 30 lbs in a college weight program. If they wanted to keep him at the 240-250 range, they would certainly be able to do that. Most guys that jump up that much in weight is because they are given the nutritional programs and weight programs to pack on that weight. They could just as easily tailor his conditioning program to keep him at a steady weight instead of bulking him up. Bama has done it with several players. We wouldn't have any LB'rs if we packed an extra 30 lbs on all our LB recruits.

Well if that truly is the case, then he doesn't fit in a 3-4. DE's in the SEC in a 3-4 style defense need to at least be about 280-285. We like ours closer to 290-295.

You want Lawson rushing the passer. That's what he does best. I'd love to see him on the edge as an LB in the 3-4. Would be fun to see what he could do in that role.

Courtney Upshaw was at least 270 playing 3-4 OLB. I'm not trying to belabor the point here, but I find it hard to believe he simply couldn't play standing up in a 3-4 as some are suggesting, and counted at least 3 3-4 teams among his offer list. It seems more likely to me he and Georgia just weren't a good match for other reasons, he felt they didn't show him enough love early on, etc.

It was us who did not offer him btw. I believe most teams offered just out of sheer talent. I personally would have done the same but what do I know?

Who are you and what have you done with Bhiley? This post is not dripping with sarcasm and actually shows an inkling of football knowledge.

Accuse? There's already proof from his head coach at the time. You can just say it at this point.

I wasn't trying to say he couldn't do it. I compared him to James Harrison. Courtney Upshaw is a fair comparison too. I think he's more of a 3-4 OLB than a 3-4 DE.
