I don't really mind 'em, but I don't think I'd ever have one as a house pet.
Had a couple of different roomies that did, and the GD cat litter that gets tracked around is just too much.
Grew up on a farm and we always had some outside. They were ok.

They can. I have one that was raised right that responds to being called, never gets pissed, talks to people, alerts when someone's at the door, will eat out of your hand, and loves everyone. He's actually pretty cool.

The one roomie's cat was addicted to cigarettes.
We used to smoke in the house and that cat would love having smoke blown in it's face. If nobody had been around smoking for a while she'd sniff the ashtrays.
She was a calico manx, and the biggest bitch of a cat ever. If you tried to pet her she'd bite you. Just a strange animal.
