    That's entirely untrue. And on top of that they selectively defaulted. They paid the British bondholders when they got Hong Kong back from England. They have legally accepted responsibility for the debt.

    International law IS voluntary but the main nations that engage in meaningful and massive trade abide by it. If they don't pay this their fiscal reputation slips and American investment will be shakier. Trust me, she has been working on this for 8 years. China came close to paying it once, this PR campaign is just her playing her cards at this current time.

    The former ruling family, now banished to Taiwan, wants to pay it and then claim that makes them officially China again. Jonna has been denying them that chance because she doesn't want to get offed by the Chinese but she'll take her money from whoever if China balks.

    While what you said is true, investors don't care about defaults that occurred over 50 years ago in a country that has underwent such a massive economic transformation. Taiwan has continuously claimed that they are the true China and I doubt that they believe that offering to pay 60 plus year old government securities to a relatively small number of American investors on a very questionable claim will sway any legitimate government to recognize them officially as China over the emerging juggernaut that is the People's Republic of China.
