Chris Low on SEC expansion

He was on Finebaum just now and basically said that if the ACC dominos begin to fall, the SEC unequivocally wants Virginia Tech. When asked who #16 could be, he made no mention of NC State. In fact, he said that the SEC could look West for the last team to balance the divisions out. Obviously this is a long way off and I believe an Eastern school would be much more likely, but for speculation's sake - who are the possible #16's?

Just thinking of border states to the West, it can't be a team from Kansas or Nebraska, so it almost has to be a Texas or Oklahoma team. Texas, OU, and OSU aren't coming, tech doesn't add anything.... I'm just stumped as to who he thinks could even be a long shot candidate.

Edit: Jokes aside, Kansas is not a crazy idea. Or maybe they are thinking BSU? Or Louisville?

Kansas would be a good basketball pickup but not sure how much economic value they add. K-state is a better football program but again, not sexy.

Virginia. idk how true this is but i have heard that virginia had to pull a lot of strings to get virginia tech into the acc. that being said, i think they are a package deal and the next 2 in are virginia and virginia tech

I was just thinking Kansas is a regional rival with Mizzou. But considering that the SEC has just cut a deal with the B12, they probably would not want to raid them if they can avoid it.

I tend to agree with that. Missouri could be with A&M and Arkansas (the closest things they have to natural rivals), and you can probably get a higher quality team from the East. Although, with UNC likely not an option, is NC State really a measurably better than Kansas, Kstate, etc?
I'd rather stay at 14 though.

Isn't slive a uva grad? Gotta think his first choice is UNC though.

I love the idea but the two thoughts that come to mind are these - will UVA be willing to go from an academic perspective? I think that issue is overblown and the SEC has improved academically, but still. Second issue is would be it be wise to add two teams from a relatively small state?

I think it would need to be handled carefully but if the Big 12 is pleased with what they're able to bring in as an addition/replacement, they may not care.

its about getting close the the washington dc market. im sure they would love vt and maryland but i think vt and va are the most likely to join

UVA is not West. And if the SEC took both VT and UVA, they would only add one new state to their footprint. It's possible, but not an obvious homerun.

16 is only a matter of time. Low isn't thinking straight IMO. I think we can take another East Coast team and just have Mizzou move to the Western Division, where they belong.

UVA and VT is not a package deal...
VT will more than likely go to the SEC.. and UVA to the B1G.
VT will look out for VT when it is all said and done if the ACC implodes.

no1 said officially it had to be an east and west team. sec added mizzou and tex a&m. they could both easily be in the west. its not about a state. its about tv markets

I was going off Chris Low's comment. If Low is just wrong, yeah, moving Mizzou to the West makes a lot of sense.

Only Texas A&M, Florida and Georgia are from states with larger populations.

SEC should grab Maryland in addition to VPI - it would provide access to DMV players and Maryland is a dumpster fire of a program, so it would not upset anyone's competitive balance.

No need to expand unless we can add two quality programs. Just because some teams might be stuck in the whithering acc doesn't mean its our problem.
