Chris Low on SEC expansion

  • FortWorthTide said...

He was on Finebaum just now and basically said that if the ACC dominos begin to fall, the SEC unequivocally wants Virginia Tech. When asked who #16 could be, he made no mention of NC State. In fact, he said that the SEC could look West for the last team to balance the divisions out. Obviously this is a long way off and I believe an Eastern school would be much more likely, but for speculation's sake - who are the possible #16's?

    Please let this be true.

Only Texas A&M, Florida and Georgia are from states with larger populations.

You're right - I wasn't clear at all but what I meant was that Virginia seems like a state that is extremely divided among fans of many different teams (especially teams from out of state). Alabama or Mississippi may be small, but the teams there don't have much competition in terms of fans. What percent of Virginians are fans of either VT or UVA? I truly don't know because I'm not from there but that was my outsider's perspective.

Big 12 gets "pedophiles" and the SEC get the "polygamist"...why not the world is coming to an end before any of this takes place. lol

Just thinking of border states to the West, it can't be a team from Kansas or Nebraska, so it almost has to be a Texas or Oklahoma team. Texas, OU, and OSU aren't coming, tech doesn't add anything.... I'm just stumped as to who he thinks could even be a long shot candidate.

I believe that the deal the Big 12 just negotiated requires all schools to give up their tier 1 & 2 rights to the conference for the length of the contract regardless of whether they stay or go. Given that stipulation I seriously doubt that any members will be leaving or that any other conference would want them.

  • Only team West is BYU, but I don't a bunch of Mormon's would fit well in the South. Won't be able to get any Big-12 or Big-10 teams.

If it's not an ACC team, only team that makes any sense at all is Louisville.

  • No way another team is aded within the footprint. If FSU bolts another team goes with them and then the Big Ten looks at schools as well as the SEC. I think the SEC would get VT and NC State. Maybe an outside chance at Maryland.

Someone above suggested SMU. Not sure if it was serious or a joke, but maybe the SEC thinks two schools in Texas is needed to balance out UT in the B12. shrug

SMU certainly his history. Difference is that the SEC has cheating down to a science, while SMU is too open about it.

Houston could work as well. They would have to increase the size of their stadium, but east Texas is damn near Louisiana anyway.

  • If I were the Big-10 I would add Pitt, and Maryland. Solidify the Northeast. Maybe Boston College as well, BC is pretty much a BIg-10 style of team anyway. Not sure Carolina is a cultural fit.

big 10 doesn't need pitt if they have Penn State..... again.. footprint issues...and penn state would block anyway... the Big 10 would have the same issue.. only real team on the board that would add value would be Notre Dame... and then you would be playing who would be 14? Virginia? Maryland? Rutgers?

Isn't slive a uva grad? Gotta think his first choice is UNC though.

UNC won't leave Duke. Basketball is their bread & butter.

PSU couldn't/wouldn't block Pitt ... but you are right that we don't want them because we already have Pennsylvania (Pitt has little national appeal). No need to do anything unless/until ACC collapses. If that happens, B10 approaches ND again to try to bring them in with whichever school(s) they want out of the ACC. If ND says "no", B10 either sticks at 12 or gives ND the final finger and expands with 2-4 of UVA/UMD/UNC/Duke/Syracuse/Miami.

  • FWIW this guy was pretty spot on during our deal last year. I know he has some sources pretty high up in our AD.

    David Sandhop ‏@HopWebsider
Sources tell me FSU and Clemson to the Big 12 is very likely. SEC targeting UNC and either UVA or Virginia Tech. UNC is the prize.

  • There is no chance UVA wants the SEC and no chance that the SEC wants UVA, neither fit each other. UVA and UNC are slam dunks for the B1G if they want to go. UVA would be giving up a ton of money by not going to the B1G if they have the opportunity, they are AAU, same with UNC, I just don't see UNC leaving Duke.

No chance the SEC takes a Big 12 school with the new deal in place.

I don't see why UNC fans would want the B1G over the SEC. How do they fit together? Correct me if I'm wrong but I've heard UNC is a pretty southern school.

more money in the Big-10 for one.

I don't think that's a given. The SEC will likely surpass the Big10 once contacts are renegotiated and the SEC network becomes fully realized. Not to mention the added value that UNC themselves would bring.

    FortWorthTide

  • Add Va tech and UNC and the SEC is making the most money 10 years down the road no questions asked

One in the hand is worth two in the bush, or something like that. SEC is currently number 3 in tv revenue, and recently signed a 10 year contract. What is ESPN's motivation for letting them renegotiate prior to the end of that contract to shell out more cash?
