***Class of 2007 247Composite***

  • Below is the Class of 2007 247Composite, which weighs equally recruiting rankings from across the industry. It's fun to take a look back and see how everything stacks up, who the busts or misses were, etc.

    Class of 2007 247Composite

    1- Joe McKnight
    2- Jimmy Clausen
    3- Eric Berry
    4- Marvin Austin
    5- Ryan Mallett

    Link to 2007 247Composite

Quick Take- Berry is the most accomplished out of this group. Mallet can get it together, he can be an NFL starter.

    Pro-Style Quarterbacks

    1- Jimmy Clausen
    2- Ryan Mallett
    3- Aaron Corp
    4- John Brantley
    5- Pat Bostick

Link to 2007 247Composite PQB Rankings

Quick take- I remember the folks in California raving about Clausen- he was a great high school quarterback and really was good at Notre Dame a couple of seasons. Will be a career back-up in the NFL. Just did not have much of a ceiling.

    Dual-Threat Quarterbacks

    1- Tyrod Taylor
    2- Willy Korn
    3- Cam Newton
    4- Kodi Burns
    5- Logan Gray

Link to Class of 2007 247Composite DQB Rankings

Quick Take- Korn got hurt obviously. I was at Rivals when this class was ranked and we had Newton as a five-star out of high school. Burns and Gray both ended up at other positions.

    Running Back

    1- Joe McKnight
    2- Marc Tyler
    3- Noel Devine
    4- Caleb King
    5- Chris Rainey

***Jonathan Dwyer checked in at No. 7

Link to Class of 2007 247Composite RB Rankings

Quick take- Year of the tiny back. Dwyer, who was mentioned, is the best of this group. Rainey has a future as a return man.

    Wide Receiver

    1-Terrance Toliver
    2- Arrelious Benn
    3- Deonte Thompson
    4- Duval Kamara
    5- DeAngelo Benton

***Dez Bryant checks in at No. 6

Link to Class of 2007 247Composite WR Rankings

Quick Take- Bryant wasn't ranked higher because of off the field stuff. Benn had a good college career and Tolliver was good, not great.

    Tight End

    1- Aaron Hernandez
    2- Mike Ragone
    3- Rob Gronkowski
    4- Chris Izbicki
    5- Ahmard Howard

Link to Class of 2007 247Composite TE Rankings

Quick take- Two pretty good calls in Hernandez and Gronkowski. Still remember watching Gronkowski at an all-star game practice that year and being more impressed than I thought I should have been.

    Offensive Tackle

    1-Josh Oglesby
    2- James Wilson
    3- Ryan Miller
    4- Lee Ziemba
    5- Martin Coleman

***Anthony Davis checks in at No. 6
***Bryan Bulaga checks in at No. 8

Link to Class of 2007 247Composite OT Rankings

Quick take- Oglesby was an excellent tackle- good calls on both Davis and Bulaga. I remember being higher on Bulaga than the people we had covering his own state. Of course, that was a good year in Illinois with Benn and Wilson.

    Offensive Guard

    1- Tray Allen
    2- Kristofer O’Dowd
    3- Michael Huey
    4- Stefen Wisniewski
    5- Chris Jacobsen

Link to Class of 2007 247Composite OG Rankings

Quick take- Wisniewski was a second round pick and was by far the class of this group.

    Center

    1- Ryan Pugh
    2- T-Bob Hebert
    3- William Vlachos

Link to Class of 2007 247Composite C Rankings

Quick take- All three excellent, tough college players.

    Athlete

    1- John Chiles
    2- Greg Little
    3- Mark Barnes
    4- Ron Brooks
    5- Brandon Paul

***Joe Haden checks in at No. 6

Link to Class of 2007 247Composite Athlete Rankings

Quick take- Haden obviously was the best here. Little was solid. Chiles didn't work hard enough and Paul and Barnes were total busts.

    Weakside Defensive End

    1- Martez Wilson
    2- Cliff Matthews
    3- Michael Keck
    4- Justin Trattou
    5- Kenny Rowe

Link to Class of 2007 247Composite WDE Rankings

Quick take- The industry made a good call here on Wilson.

    Strongside Defensive End

    1- Everson Griffen
    2- Carlos Dunlap
    3- Ben Martin
    4- Allen Bailey
    5- Richetti Jones

Link to Class of 2007 247Composite SDE Rankings

Quick take- I remember the big debate being Griffen vs. Dunlap

    Defensive Tackle

    1- Marvin Austin
    2- Torrey Davis
    3- DaJohn Harris
    4- Joseph Barksdale
    5- John Brown

***Brian Price checked in at No. 10

Quick take- I ended up being right about John Brown being overrated and not the player many around Florida were making him out to be. I ended up being wrong about Brian Price, who was excellent.

Link to Class of 2007 247Composite DT Rankings

    Inside Linebacker

    1- Chris Galippo
    2- Derrick Stephens
    3- Scotty Cooper
    4- Dewey Elliot
    5- Melvin Ingram

Link to Class of 2007 247Composite ILB Rankings

Quick take- Ingram was the best all-around football player at the Shrine Bowl that year.

    Outside Linebacker

    1- Austin Box
    2- Chris Donald
    3- Keenan Robinson
    4- Manny Abreu
    5- Kerry Neal

Link to Class of 2007 247Composite OLB Rankings

Quick take- Donald was a swing and whiff. I remember there being lots of argument for Kerry Neal to be top overall prospect. Funny how he wasn't, then Brandon Barnes from the same high school was a five, went to N.C. State and we never heard from him, then this year Jon Alston has excellent film, is ranked No. 160 in the country, but he isn't a for sure take for several schools. Lesson- beware of Bunn High prospects!

    Cornerback

    1- Eric Berry
    2- Ronald Johnson
    3- Curtis Brown
    4- Donovan Warren
    5- Gary Gray

Link to Class of 2007 247Composite CB Rankings

Quick take- Berry of course was a high draft pick and an All-SEC/All-American at safety. Johnson ended up playing receiver.

    Safety

    1- Eugene Clifford
    2- Jerimy Finch
    3- Marshall Jones
    4- Major Wright
    5- Chad Jones

***Earl Thomas checked in at No. 12

Link to Class of 2007 247Composite S Rankings

Quick take- Finch and Jones and Wright were big kids that would hit you- almost linebacker-esque.

  • Eugene Clifford the biggest bust?

  • 1- Jimmy Clausen - LOL
    2- Ryan Mallett - Eh
    3- Aaron Corp - ???
4- John Brantley - Very Eh
    5- Pat Bostick - ???

As for Earl Thomas, that's cray that he was that low. Probably still stop 247 I guess, so he was definitely a talent maximizer.

Well over half of these dudes never did squat.

I don't think USC even recruits at Orange Lutheran (Corp) or at Oaks Christian (Clausen) anymore. At least not lately that I can recall.

  • All in all a bad class at least at the top. Lots of busts and kids that were overrated from the get go.

Agree on Dez Bryant. LSU had him in the bag but fell in love with Toliver and was scared of the off field Dez Bryant. You could see that Bryant was a stud even back then. Toliver is still a very good talent but for some reason can't put it together. A shame that LSU saddled him with horrible QBs during his career. May have stunted his growth as a player and be effecting him to this day.

I think of what could have been if Perriloux stayed at LSU instead of having to rely on Lee and JJ.

I knew I wasn't too far off base.

Just goes to show you some of these guys are going to hurt their careers by not knowing the difference between high school football and college football and how they can reach their ultimate goal by developing at the college level.

It's not always 100 percent that guys make poor decisions, though. Sometimes they prove the doubters wrong.

Ryan was the last QB recruited by Jimbo

No shock here the position went to hell after he left

  • I wasn't in the national rankings process back then, but I loved Marc Tyler. He had the really bad injury, and one that I think really did hurt his career in football opportunities. One hell of a talent.

This is why FSU recruited so poorly that year

Jeff Bowden knew it so he decided to take even worse players just to be safe

  • That class really sucked for FSU. I believe only about six players from that class graduated.

I just noticed this... Wasn't Clausen around two years older than most typical hs graduates? I thought he graduated at close to 20 years of age. Or is that sort of thing normal for football players?

  • I'd say mallett proved to be the top QB in that class in college. Dude was a stud for us at Arkansas and will eventually play in the nfl. It's not a bad gig being Tom Brady's back up for a few years.

I think Cam Newton probably is the guy, but Mallett IMO will be a good pro one day.
