    Quick Take- Berry is the most accomplished out of this group. Mallet can get it together, he can be an NFL starter.

    Quick take- I remember the folks in California raving about Clausen- he was a great high school quarterback and really was good at Notre Dame a couple of seasons. Will be a career back-up in the NFL. Just did not have much of a ceiling.

    Dual-Threat Quarterbacks

    Quick Take- Korn got hurt obviously. I was at Rivals when this class was ranked and we had Newton as a five-star out of high school. Burns and Gray both ended up at other positions.

    Running Back

    5- Chris Rainey

    Quick take- Year of the tiny back. Dwyer, who was mentioned, is the best of this group. Rainey has a future as a return man.

    Quick Take- Bryant wasn't ranked higher because of off the field stuff. Benn had a good college career and Tolliver was good, not great.

    Quick take- Two pretty good calls in Hernandez and Gronkowski. Still remember watching Gronkowski at an all-star game practice that year and being more impressed than I thought I should have been.

    Offensive Tackle

    4- Lee Ziemba
    5- Martin Coleman

    Quick take- Oglesby was an excellent tackle- good calls on both Davis and Bulaga. I remember being higher on Bulaga than the people we had covering his own state. Of course, that was a good year in Illinois with Benn and Wilson.

    Offensive Guard

    3- Michael Huey
    4- Stefen Wisniewski

    Quick take- Wisniewski was a second round pick and was by far the class of this group.

    Quick take- I ended up being right about John Brown being overrated and not the player many around Florida were making him out to be. I ended up being wrong about Brian Price, who was excellent.

    Quick take- Ingram was the best all-around football player at the Shrine Bowl that year.

    Quick take- Donald was a swing and whiff. I remember there being lots of argument for Kerry Neal to be top overall prospect. Funny how he wasn't, then Brandon Barnes from the same high school was a five, went to N.C. State and we never heard from him, then this year Jon Alston has excellent film, is ranked No. 160 in the country, but he isn't a for sure take for several schools. Lesson- beware of Bunn High prospects!

    Cornerback

    1- Eric Berry
    2- Ronald Johnson
    3- Curtis Brown
    4- Donovan Warren
    5- Gary Gray

    Quick take- Berry of course was a high draft pick and an All-SEC/All-American at safety. Johnson ended up playing receiver.

    As for Earl Thomas, that's cray that he was that low. Probably still stop 247 I guess, so he was definitely a talent maximizer.

    I don't think USC even recruits at Orange Lutheran (Corp) or at Oaks Christian (Clausen) anymore. At least not lately that I can recall.

    Agree on Dez Bryant. LSU had him in the bag but fell in love with Toliver and was scared of the off field Dez Bryant. You could see that Bryant was a stud even back then. Toliver is still a very good talent but for some reason can't put it together. A shame that LSU saddled him with horrible QBs during his career. May have stunted his growth as a player and be effecting him to this day.

    I knew I wasn't too far off base.

    Just goes to show you some of these guys are going to hurt their careers by not knowing the difference between high school football and college football and how they can reach their ultimate goal by developing at the college level.

    It's not always 100 percent that guys make poor decisions, though. Sometimes they prove the doubters wrong.

  • I wasn't in the national rankings process back then, but I loved Marc Tyler. He had the really bad injury, and one that I think really did hurt his career in football opportunities. One hell of a talent.

    I just noticed this... Wasn't Clausen around two years older than most typical hs graduates? I thought he graduated at close to 20 years of age. Or is that sort of thing normal for football players?

  • I'd say mallett proved to be the top QB in that class in college. Dude was a stud for us at Arkansas and will eventually play in the nfl. It's not a bad gig being Tom Brady's back up for a few years.

    I think Cam Newton probably is the guy, but Mallett IMO will be a good pro one day.
