  • I saw after the game that Lewan and Clowney told each other they were the best players they'd played against or something along that nature. They will both be rich men soon.

Anyone who watches the play closely, should realize Clowney was NOT Lewans block on that particular play. Lewan doesnt even look Clowneys way once the ball is snapped. He goes straight for the MLB. Notice the Michigan pulling guard or tackle from the right side of the line. He pulls and just gets nowhere close to Clowney, to get to his block. In fact- Clowney may have already been hitting the RB by the time the pulling lineman got to the spot where he expected Clowney to be.

This isnt directed to just you USMCAG, but anyone in here suggesting Lewan got owned on that play. Watch it again.

Wasn't Lewan that was supposed to block him on that play. They were pulling the opposite guard and he just didnt get there to kick Clowney out. Clowney was way to quick.

    Play

2013 USC vs Michigan - Jadeveon Clowney Hu...

After a horrible call by the referees that gave Michigan the first down, Jadeveon Clowney lays a huge hit on Vincent Smith right as he takes the handoff. The hit knocks loose Smith's helmet and the ball which Clowney recovers. First down Gamecocks! Todd Ellis and Tommy Suggs on the call. Video from ESPN Audio from 107.5 The Game

  • Calling it now watching the UA game skills challenge. There will be at least 3 threads by Miss St fans on this board by signing day comparing Chris Jones to Clowney, probably saying he's at least as good if not better.

Help me out here, I always like watching film and you obviously have answers here, and to tell you the truth, I think I watched four michigan games this year total. Borges runs those tight zone reads, and in that morphed offense this year of the spread and WCO, you have to block space on that side and not men. The pulling guard is not supposed to "kick out" anyone but is supposed to lead through a whole and climb to the second level as a rule I always thought. If you have a combination block and are the outside lineman (Lewan here) you pick up your head and look to your outside first. You wouldn't block down in a zone blocking scheme, you have the outside half of the defender first. If he goes outside, you now must lock you backside hand because your help is climbing and the ball is rolling back behind you. you don't expect the "pulling guard" to kick anyone out, he's going to climb to the second level as lead usually.

I know Lewan didn't touch Clowney. I don't think Borges would design a play that took that long to get to an unblocked Clowney, that's high school harry stuff and it would be foolish. I think the back side tackle missed an assignment. Do you actually think that play was designed to "kick out clowned" after borgess did all that film study? They actually were going to let him go unblocked and let the pulling guard kick him out? Especially in a tight zone read package?

I'm not saying anything but that I'm guessing at the blocking scheme here. I will be more shocked if you think that the idea was to let clowney go unblocked, and actually pull a guard to kick that monster out instead of go head up in a zone blocking scheme and pull the guard to climb up to the second level in front of the back.

I'm certainly not sure here, but I'd like your opinion. Thanks.

Edit: Watching the film this morning, both Lewan and the tight end go after the LB immediately. Now why would you send two to get the LB? That is a serious design flaw. I'm pretty sure only one is supposed to go? Who would you send to go there? One of those guys made a huge mistake.
