Coach rankings: Big Ten

  • Wasn't it the sporting news that had the article about how urban Meyer destroyed Florida? Now they're saying he is the best coach in the Big Ten? Well so much for consistency.

Not to start a flame war here, but how was Michigan's improvement not predominantly a result of Hoke?

I never said their IMPROVEMENT wasn't predominantly a result of Hoke. Their OVERACHIEVING was. With competent coaching, UM should have been an 8 win (regular season) team last year. They managed 10. But it wasn't predominantly because of Hoke's coaching.

Ha, alright. Michigan's defense didn't look 100x better than the previous year at all..

It had no where to go but.....UP, am I right?

    My thoughts:

Urban: Fair enough, if you consider his whole body of work outside the B10. Time will tell how he works out in the B10.

Bielema: I'd knock him down a spot because he has cost his team wins with his decisionmaking.

Dantonio: Damn straight. I'd put him at #2.

Hoke: Tough to rank because he only has 1 season coaching big time football. His team overachieved, but not predominantly because of his coaching.

Fitzgerald: It's mindboggling how you can put him below 4th. Northwestern is built to be a perennial cellar-dweller. Thanks to his coaching (and solely his coaching), they're in the 6-8 win range. I could make a strong case for him being the best coach in the conference.

Hard to argue with your assessment of Coach B. He still has some learning to do and that has been frustrating. On the other side of that you can't argue with his record and how he gets these kids to buy into the University and the program. Not many coaches have a team winning that many games when your state averages about 2 High D1 recruits per year. We have 3 this year and they all play the same position.

Uh Duh. Why did they win more games?

Becuase the defense was improved ala Gregg Matisson.

Yep that would be the reason. It's football man not rocket science! Your fan base is 1 of the most football savy in the sport. Don't make thim look bad!

My 5 year old son could of answered that question, though he would have followed it up with a Muck fichagin.

Do you read? My post was a rhetorical question aimed at InTenSity. Way to fit the ignorant OSU fan stereotype.

What's the difference at that point? If a competent coach gets 8 wins at Michigan last year, with the same schedule, then Hoke and his staff are the reason for the overachievement of 2 games.

    Not necessarily...

But if a competent coaching staff gets 8 wins with last years schedule, what was the reason for the extra 2 games? It can't be schedule as you have said that a competent coach would get 8 wins, so what else was it?

Luck (which is always a factor) and opponent collapses.

So basically what your saying is that Michigan didn't win those games, their opponents lost them?

Not at all. UM won those games. This isn't a debate on how many games UM won. It's a debate on Hoke's role in those wins. I'm pretty sure Hoke's coaching acumen didn't force ND's secondary to forget basic motor skills. I think he's a good coach. But given that his body of work has such a small sample size and that a couple of his wins weren't primarily due to his coaching, I'm not really quick to put him that high on the list.

I agree completely, us Michigan fans should be concerned about the way that Meyer is completely dominating Hoke in recruiting in regards to the OLine.
