Coaches that should have been fired by now......

  • Established guys. Not someone like Dooley at Tennessee that really has this year and maybe one more to show improvement.

I would go with Jeff Tedford at Cal.

In 2002-2006, they were 43-20 with 2 10-win seasons. Since then, they are 36-28 and a 9-4, 4th place finish in the PAC 10 in 2008 has been the best year. The kicker is that they have recruited pretty well during that time also and have put some top player into the NFL.

He has lost 8 straight to SC.
1-5 vs Oregon St since 2007.
Lost 3 straight to Oregon and Washington.
Started 5-0 vs Stanford, but has since gone 2-3 and has been completely left behind by his main rival.

The other name that I thought about was Mark Richt, but he got things flipped back just in time I feel. He does need to continue that trend as I doubt that the administration is going to allow another rehash of 2008-2010 to happen again.

UGA has lost 9 straight to teams that finished the season ranked, and is 2-15 vs teams that finished ranked since the start of the 2008 season.

He is 3-8 against a main rival in Florida, which is usually a pretty damning statistic for any coach, but when you look at the other rival games, he was faired very well.

    7-4 vs Tennessee
    7-4 vs Auburn
    10-1 vs Ga Tech
7-4 vs South Carolina (this game has become very important to both teams lately).

Another name to think about is Dabo. Last season was a great one at Clemson, but I think the bowl game and some late season losses left a bit of a bad taste. With the collapses that Clemson became used to under Bowden, I doubt they are going to be very patient is Dabo has a setback or two.

  • It is hard for me to say this, because I think he is a good coach, but Mike Riley has reached his peak at Oregon St. 72 wins in 11 seasons is the definition of mediocre. I know it is Oregon State, but sometimes you just need a change. What good is going 7-5 year after year and taking trips to WGAS bowls??? They need a young guy to come in there and shake things up.

I want to also say Mack Brown, but I think you need to give him this year to see what he can do. Anything less than 10 wins, and he should be gone. There is just too much talent in TX that kills to be a Longhorn for them to have a couple of mediocre seasons, but I am willing to give him one last chance since they had nine 10+ seasons in a row.

  • Mark Richt. UGA should be a powerhouse on the level of bama and LSU with all the talent that is in Georgia. He should have been fired 2 years ago. I am loving that they haven't though, because UGA is a sleeping giant with the right coach.

Remember looking at some Bama boards for a week after that game. There were plenty of threads calling for his head. "Passionate" group they have over there, that's for sure

  • Randy Edsall. Should have been fired the day after he was hired.

  • I am going to go with Richt for sure. but I am leaning toward Beamer. 10 wins a season is good but we now play 12 games a season and 10 wins will never go to a championship. I think a new energetic locker room could push that team to be a champion on a special year. That school keeps Beamer around because they think he will take them to a championship but he isn't the coach that will do it IMO.

EDIT: I don't know if that necessarily means he should be fired. I don't think he should be fired but if they want to see a championship they will need a new coach.

Wait, what? Frank Beamer is VT football. You must not understand their past history. He built that program and will be the face of it forever. He is a legend there and could have 10 straight losing seasons and keep his job.

thats why I put the edit part in. I don't think he deserves to be fired. I just don't see them ever winning a championship with him there. They need new blood to get over the hump. I think once that fan base realizes this they will start to ask for him to retire so they can get someone new in.

Probably the two most successful coaches in their school's history

Beamer has been a great coach. They went to a BCS game last year, what else do you want? You expect VT to compete for championships every year? Yeah...

    Bingo.

The answer to this question starts & stops with Mark Richt, but I'm stoked that UGA keeps giving him extensions.

He beats USC every few years. In Oregon that's huge. He was the one coach that had Pete's number. He either won or it was a pretty good game most years.

Yeah, I heard that. Reminds me of Rutgers with Schiano (only he never beat anyone of note). Luckily for them, the Bucs took him off their hands.

I think that Riley is being rewarded for staying put. He is an Oregon guy, although he did play for Coach Bryant at Alabama. He has actually had numerous chances (College and possibly NFL) to leave and has stayed. I don't have a problem with a program knowing its own limitations and keeping the best they are going to get.

There is a lot to be said for stability at a program when you are not an elite location. I think Texas Tech is finding this out the hard way and will continue to do so for a while. Mike Leach would have loved to have stayed there, but they let ESPN dictate what they were going to do and now they have to deal with it.

They've been waiting on the right coach for 100 years because they've never been on the level of the all time great programs. Theyve had good stretch runs but I've never been sold I the sleeping giant argument. If they were, it would have happened by now.
