College Towns

My unbiased view... I think alot of people are confusing college cities w/ college towns. Yes, Tempe is awesome, but it doesn't thrive on the University alone. Contrary to many Bama fans, I think AU has a cool set up for their University in terms of a college "town". I don't think FSU should be on the list. It has a really cool campus, but doesn't give you that small town college feel at all.

A true college town thrives because of a college. Tuscaloosa would be a rest stop on the free way if it weren't for the University. Auburn would be a grazing territory for cows if it weren't for the University. So... my view in no particular order:

Tuscaloosa Ann Harbor Auburn Oxford Etc...

South Carolina is roughly 109th on the list. If you've been there... you know what I mean.

Whats the deal with Tuscaloosa. My brothers a freshman and he goes there, my parents said there's basically nothing there. My dad even called Whataburger and tried to open a franchise there. I thought College Station was pretty small but apparently Tuscaloosa would make up only a fraction of it.

Tuscaloosa is bigger than college station I believe. I do hate the lack of whataburger and don't understand it, but the town is around 100,000 people with 35,000 students added on. It's no metropolis, but neither is c-stat. Don't get me wrong, I love college station, but it's odd to say in reference to Tuscaloosa that "there's nothing there". What is in college station that qualifies as "something there" other than whataburger?

Edit - actually just checked college stations population and it's 97,000 so basically the same but y'all do have an extra 15,000 students. The two areas are also similar because we have Northport, which is basically our Bryan.

Please see my original post. I made sure to put "(or big cities w/ major universities)." Actually, I'm not a Texas fan. I grew up in Texas and went to Auburn. I root for Texas over aTm, however, b/c I don't believe in cults.

you also said you were biased when you put auburn first.

I label cities around colleges into three groups:

    1. The "College Town": The city that lives 100% because of the school nearby.

    2. The "College with a City": The city that thrives due to the college but would be a lot less large without it.

    3. The "City with a College": The city that honestly is cool with or without the school. (e.g.: Atlanta to GA Tech)

    Tuscaloosa is option 2 IMO.

    To break it down further:

    1. The city loves the college students.

    2. The city hates the college students (IE: Tuscaloosa).

    3. The city is indifferent towards the college students.

  • I haven't been to a whole lot of college campus's. So I can't comment intelligently on the campus's I haven't been to:

    1) Athens, GA
    2) Clemson, SC
    3) Auburn, AL
    4) Blacksburg, VA
    5) Knoxville, TN

This is all I can list for small town college's. I refuse to list Tuscaloosa and I'm not sure if Gainesville is considered a college town. I imagine there are some nice towns in Cali or in the Rockies, but I have never been out that way. Btw, I don't need to have a town full of bars to have a good time. Whether or not the town had a bunch of bars had nothing to do with my list.

My girlfriend goes to Auburn. Talk about BORING! The campus is nice, but it's the worst place to go out in. The girls dress so conservative there's nothing to look at and southern guys look like carbon copies of each other. You don't fit in if you're not wearing a Ralph Lauren polo and some gay Costa sunglasses with a neckband.

Don't forget about the uncomfortably short shorts and deck shoes.

And are people serious about South Bend? ND's campus is nice, but that city is a dump.

Ann Arbor women are ugly. Therefore Ann Arbor cannot be in this discussion.

George's Bar is the only thing worth visiting Waco for. Also, maybe a good Texas country music concert, here and there.
