College football's upper class

I notice you posting negatively in seemingly every AU thread. You still upset that AU has BCS crystal and USC doesn't?

What "Au thread" ? I really have nothing against AU, I just can't say I think the people's champions and the pimping for a share of the NC by your then coach - who just the year before, said Auburn would never play USC again - begging for validity. It's not about auburn at all, it's anyone who did what I mention above. USC has done things I think is ridiculous, as well as our fans, I've never kept my mouth shut about that. I also don't think Auburn belongs on that list of elite, great program, yes.

National Championships were awarded long before the BCS...and all I care about is we actually played the game, and won. That ugly piece of glass means nothing really, IMO...Heritage Hall is filled with hardware, and not just football.

I actually agree with a lot of this... Kinda like that rich family that is rich because they have always been rich... guy that made his fortune thing.. makes so much since... the upper class isn't necessarily ranked higher or lower... its like saying Bill Gates is rich because he made his fortune vs the Waltons are rich because daddy gave them money... Walton family may have more money but they didn't get it by themselves but they also didn't lose all of their money.... ND may be going through a recession but they are def still a rich school... stock might crash soon though...

It's never as simple or crude as "Daddy gave them money". The wealth must be invested and spending monitored appropriately. A family may have built a fortune five generations ago, but if subsequent generations do not honor and respect what it took to build and maintain that wealth it will be lost.

The same is true with football. Wade and Frank Thomas built a dynasty at Alabama, but it took continued success to maintain that legacy. Over the years, just like wealthy families, there were coaches who added to the legacy like Coach Bryant, Stallings, and Saban, but there were also coaches who led it into a decline like Whitworth, Perkins, and DuBose.

If one inherits something of that magnitude and hopes to pass it along to future generations one must work to maintain and/or add to that which was bequeathed or it will eventually be lost.

Like I said before, it is never as simple or crude as "Daddy gave them money".

  • In addition to my last post, I think some people are ignoring the fact that this is a "right now" categorization and not an all-time one. Substitute your own definition of "Upper Class" in for the writer's, and you're obviously going to come up with much different results.

Exactly. Alabama has been a national power when their conference was weak, and when it was strong. The name has been powerful throughout CFB history.

Their tradition had nothing to do with the conference they play in, but everything to do with who they are.

Haters gonna hate. I feel pretty comfortable with the last ten years of Auburn football and I think I am gonna love the next ten.

it's not hating, it's reality. auburn has enjoyed some success, but have some perspective.

bama and lsu have been significantly better than auburn over the past 10 years. florida has had a significantly better decade than auburn as well.

how can you call yourself elite on a national level when 3 teams in your conference, and 2 in your own division, totally outclass you?

Sound defensive to me, and maybe a tad too unsure of your programs place.

Isn't this forum to share opinions? I'm sure there have been, and will be, opinions where praise is merited and shared by me regarding your program, or mine.

All you have to do is lie and say Auburn is important and as nationally significant as Alabama, then they will leave you alone.

So there is a conf limit on how many elite teams you can have? Hell, the 3 best teams in college football last year were Bama, LSU, and Arkansas. Auburn has also had more undefeated season than LSU, Bama, and Florida over the past 10 years.

Recent national championships is a good place to start if you ask me. Why is it so hard for people to admit AU is a top tier program.

Really? Maybe you should have some perspective. Where is AU "totally outclassed"?

2002-2011 (past 10 years, as you said):

    lsu
105-27, 3 SEC Championships, 2 BCS Championships, 0 undefeated seasons

    florida
95-36, 2 SEC Championships, 2 BCS Championships, 1 undefeated season

    AU
94-35, 2 SEC Championships, 1 BCS Championship, 2 undefeated seasons

    bama
70-39, 1 SEC Championship, 2 BCS Championships, 1 undefeated season

    And for fun, Texas
103-26, 2 Big XII Championships, 1 BCS Championship, 1 undefeated season

Seems to me you are holding AU's conference affiliation against them, considering if Texas was in AU's spot, they'd stack up just the same. If anything, AU doing what it has while being in the SEC with the teams you mentioned makes it even more impressive.

i didn't write an article calling texas elite, did i?

and if i were to write an article about cfb's elite, no, i wouldn't include texas. although i'd say we're at the very top of the next tier, whatever it is you want to call it.

You do realize he has Alabama at the top of the pile, right?

Auburn is in the "Upper Class" category, but at the bottom. It's not an entirely unfair assessment. I'm not certain Florida and LSU deserve to be at the bottom of the upper class barrel, but Auburn is most certainly where it belongs and Georgia is not, in my opinion.

so if you didn't write it why are you all in the middle arguing with these guys about auburn. you should be arguing with the guy that wrote the article. i don't see a problem with it except for the fact that he has miss state in the poor category but ole miss in the middle class when we have clearly passed them.

    bama - 2 mnc, 6 ten/+ win seasons, 3 bcs bowls
    lsu - 2 mnc, 6 ten/+ win seasons, 4 bcs bowls
    florida - 2 mnc, 3 ten/+ win seasons, 3 bcs bowls
    auburn - 1 mnc, 3 ten/+ win seasons, 2 bcs bowls

if you go back 15, or 20 years, it's much worse for auburn compared to those 3.
