College football's upper class

  • Its not even the bottom of the top category... its the same category.. if that was the case FSU would not be ahead of UF unfortunately... the difference is not in who is better than who at the top.... its saying

Blue Bloods-Storied program who have consistently been rich throughout generations

-nouveau riche- which means you just recently became rich... Like fsu who have made their program a national power in recent history...starting from the bottom

-Cooperate Elite- big names that who have been around at the top for a long time but have just finally made that big step into being rich...Like UF who although they were a pretty good program were not truely elite until the 90s....

All are equally elite in level and are all the schools you think about when you think who will win the national title this year...

    bama - 2 mnc, 6 ten/+ win seasons, 3 bcs bowls lsu - 2 mnc, 6 ten/+ win seasons, 4 bcs bowls florida - 2 mnc, 3 ten/+ win seasons, 3 bcs bowls auburn - 1 mnc, 3 ten/+ win seasons, 2 bcs bowls

if you go back 15, or 20 years, it's much worse for auburn compared to those 3.

Again, compare AU to the entire list of Upper Class and see where they rank. Doing it with just teams in the SEC is dumb. You're taking points away from a team for competing against the teams you're calling the best and still doing as good as many of the teams you aren't arguing about who are in lesser conferences.

i get your angle, i just don't agree w/ it. elite means the best of the best. auburn is not the best of the best.

and if you want to compare against texas, here's that breakdown:

    auburn - 1 mnc, 3 ten/+ win seasons, 2 bcs bowls
    texas - 1 mnc, 8 ten/+ win seasons, 4 bcs bowls

you're not as good as texas, and i don't consider texas elite because we don't have multiple national championships over the last 10 years when 3 other teams do.

While that may be true, you only have to beat Oklahoma every year and the rest of your conference as a whole is not on a top level. You should be elite considering it is a two team conference.

  • To me, it's all a matter of how far back you want to go. 25 years? 10 years? 5 years?

    Nebraska

5 Years - Bo Pelini bringing the program back to a respectable level.

10 Years - Callahan flushes our 35 year streak of bowl appearances.

25 - Osborne went 60-3 in his final five seasons as Nebraska's head coach, in bringing three national titles.

I don't think you'll find many (if any) Husker fans who argue we're a college power right now. I see Nebraska as a "traditional power," and think most of our fans do.

I don't think there are a whole lot of programs that have won back-to-back national championships on two occasions. For the Huskers, it was 70-71, and 94-95.

Like I said -- We've got work to do to get respect again on the national level, but the history is there.

His article broke it down as Upper Class, Upper Middle Class, Middle Class, and Working Poor.

He took the Upper Class category a step further and broke it down as Blue Blood, Nouveau Riche, and Corporate Elite.

There are distinct differences between those three categories if you continue with the social class comparison.

signature image signature image signature image

    MsnBama

  • I look at the article basically like this (I think this is what he meant by it):

    UPPER CLASS
Alabama, Auburn, Florida, Florida State, Georgia, LSU, Miami, Michigan, Nebraska, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Oregon, Penn State, Tennessee, Texas and USC

You would not be stunned if any of these teams won a national championship.

    UPPER MIDDLE CLASS
Arkansas, Clemson, North Carolina, Oklahoma State, South Carolina, Stanford, Texas A&M, UCLA, Virginia Tech, Washington, West Virginia and Wisconsin

While you may not be stunned if these teams find themselves there, it would take an upgrade in current status to do so -- and be somewhat surprising.

    MIDDLE CLASS
Arizona, Arizona State, Boise State, Boston College, BYU, Cal, Colorado, Georgia Tech, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas State, Maryland, Michigan State, Missouri, N.C. State, Ole Miss, Oregon State, Pittsburgh, Purdue, Syracuse, TCU, Texas Tech, Utah and Virginia

    Would be surprising.

    WORKING POOR
Baylor, Cincinnati, Connecticut, Duke, Minnesota, Indiana, Iowa State, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisville, Mississippi State, Northwestern, Rutgers, Temple, USF, Wake Forest, Washington State and Vanderbilt

    Would be shocking.

it's not hating, it's reality. auburn has enjoyed some success, but have some perspective.

bama and lsu have been significantly better than auburn over the past 10 years. florida has had a significantly better decade than auburn as well.

how can you call yourself elite on a national level when 3 teams in your conference, and 2 in your own division, totally outclass you?

Is that why AU has beaten Bama 7/10? 2 SEC and a Natty as well? With two perfect seasons.

yeah that is what I thought...

Bama guy who just said that is being a homer cause he doesn't like Auburn but 3 undefeated seasons in the SEC since 93 shows they are an elite team... GA is the only team(as you stated) which is hard to place considering they are probably in between upper class and rich and they have been that way forever...

You're wrong. The guy I quoted asked why Oregon was listed above LSU. My post was a response to his question. I know Auburn is a top program.

Assuming things only makes you an a** buddy.

Oregon is not listed above LSU. Both are listed as Upper Class. They're just listed in different subsections. Both rich - just different.

Really? Maybe you should have some perspective. Where is AU "totally outclassed"?

2002-2011 (past 10 years, as you said):

lsu 105-27, 3 SEC Championships, 2 BCS Championships, 0 undefeated seasons

florida 95-36, 2 SEC Championships, 2 BCS Championships, 1 undefeated season

AU 94-35, 2 SEC Championships, 1 BCS Championship, 2 undefeated seasons

bama 70-39, 1 SEC Championship, 2 BCS Championships, 1 undefeated season

And for fun, Texas 103-26, 2 Big XII Championships, 1 BCS Championship, 1 undefeated season

Seems to me you are holding AU's conference affiliation against them, considering if Texas was in AU's spot, they'd stack up just the same. If anything, AU doing what it has while being in the SEC with the teams you mentioned makes it even more impressive.

    Lets get 1 thing straight.

UF has never had an undefeated season. Both of their NC's were 1 loss seasons.

He has them in the poor category, because they are.

Oh, yeah, MSUs' all time record is sub .500. That's pathetic. Your team sucks dude, historically and currently. You can post 52-14, but that isn't going to make Rich Rod Michigan's coach again or put MSU in a BCS bowl game.
