While Nebraska is much improved academically since the crazy 70s where Dr. Tom had all of those walk-ons, it is not up to par to the rest of the Big 10. Further, they wanted to only add schools that were members of the same academic association, which Nebraska was upon admission only to lose that certification shortly thereafter.

Let me get this straight. A Nebraska guy told me to look up how many Academic All-Americans their football team has had as proof to the level of academics at their school. That is so wrong on so many levels. If football players are thriving so much, maybe the academic level is worse than the rankings show.
I mean, as backwards as the rest of the country thinks the state of Alabama is (sometimes I admit it is warranted), the state has 2 schools ranked in the top 100 in the country academically (Alabama and Auburn). Both of these schools are ahead of the academic powerhouse known as Nebraska.
The athletic conferences have nothing to do with academics. When the B1G formed years and years ago, I can assure you that Toledo and Bowling Green weren't left out because of academics. The only conference that was founded on academic principles was the Ivy League. The rest was about one thing: $$$$

Saying that Nebraska is not good academically does not hold water. Yes, they are no longer a member of the AAU, but that is like saying Scarlett Johannson is cannot be pretty because she is not a model. Nebraska is a great academic school by every measure that I have seen and add a top 10 football program. Still a great add by the Big 10 that I'm sure they do not regret in the least. I feel bad for Kansas. I know they would do anything to join Nebraska and eventually Missouri. I think it is silly and a shame that the States of Kansas, Oklahoma, and Texas handcuff their flagship schools with the State schools. That would not go over well at all here in Tennessee. Let the State schools kill their own dinner and bring it home or they can join the Sunbelt/ Conference USA types places just like Tennessee State U.
