Right, only conservative politicians are pawns for powerful people. LOL. Wow.

The thread is about conservatives. I doubt he was only implying that.

Can you name a conservative politician out there who isn't a pawn for powerful people?

No flame, I'm genuinely curious. I know of Jon Huntsman, but I think it's stretch to really call him conservative, he just ran under the Republican banner.

    Ron Paul, Haley Barbour.

  • I really like Evan Bayh but it seems he's gotten out of politics atleast for the time being to take a couple corporate jobs. I tend to like democrats from republican states simply because they believe in fiscal responsibility but aren't as hardcore 'bible thumpers'.

Blue dog democrats! They tend to get shunned by their party on the national level...ie Zell Miller.

  • Pretty sad that we can only come up with a few names. Ron Paul is easily the first name that comes to mind, but look how successful he's been on the national stage.

Exactly, always great, moderate politicians but have trouble getting elected in the south because of 'full ticket' voters and when they do get office the dems are still skeptical because they're from the south lol

  • No way. We need a President who can defeat Iran, not Kobyashi.

Jesus, do they not teach reading comprehension where you grew up?

In a thread about conservatives, I was keeping the discussion on-topic, and thus asking about conservative politicians. Nowhere did I say or imply that only conservative politicians are pawns for powerful people - I think it goes without saying that politicians across the political spectrum are pawns for powerful people.

Must be glad BLF gave you that easy out huh? And at least I know what year it is. Maybe you can link some articles from the 30's that would be relevant to our discussion here. LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Heh. I look forward to you not letting that go for the remainder of the time we're on tBB.

You're a funny guy. It's a pity only one of us is capable of manning up and admitting when he's wrong.

You didn't admit it, you tried to pass it off as whatever. So yeah I am going to rub your face in it for a couple days.

Please tell me how, in your world, the words "I admit I didn't look at the dates on the articles" is anything other than an admission.

Seriously, I'd love to hear it.

Because right after it you played it off as "well if history is any indication"...Not a satisfactory admission. I want a complete surrender. I demand one.

There's nothing more to admit. I didn't read the dates, so my sources didn't support my contention that Obama said for sure that he wouldn't take his vacation in 2012 until a deal is worked out. My not reading the sources doesn't necessarily mean that my contention was wrong.

As of right now, it's wrong.

Without a clear opponent like Obama to vote against, could you get excited/vote for a Northeast moderate like Chris Christie in a stand-alone election (2016)?

I kind of like the guy. I think he would be a good President.

One thing I learned about this past election, if you like them and support them, there is a 100% chance I don't.

But I publicly stated that if Romney governed like he did in Massachussetts I would have voted for him, but since that wasnt a guarantee, I couldn't take that chance? shrug

Exactly, it's like voting for McCain and living on pins and needles that he doesn't die and leave us with Sarah Palin...too risky.

  • One point I'd like to make that ties in to the OP's thread title; conservative/liberal is a bad grouping much like our degeneration into a two-party system.

Most people would lump me in the conservative category, much like they do Ron Paul. However this is extremely myopic in that it completely negates my "modern liberal" views on most social issues. I, like the majority of Americans, fall under what would be the Libertarian umbrella if you must classify me. Now I am a bit more extreme than most (very fiscally conservative and am for the legalization of all drugs...). If we go back in history, I wold be defined as a "classical liberal", as would any libertarian leaning person. Thomas Jefferson is one of the greatest minds in our nation's history (actually, world history).

You have people that are fiscally liberal and socially conservative, where do you put them??? (other than out of their misery, j/k).

Fiscally liberal and socially conservative lol I hope those people don't exist, if I had to go issue for issue I'd line up with Jill Scott and the green party but as everyone knows, an independent vote is a vote for republicans so I couldn't do it.

  • Conservatives could use Jesus Christ himself as their nominee and not win the election. Too many minorities vote now and the words "conservative" and "republican" scare the living shat out of them. No way another Republican ever wins the presidency IMO. And for the record I am a conservative so this is not a flame.

I agree. It doesn't matter who runs for President in the next few elections. There are so many minorities and immigrants voting that the Democratic Party will win and its only going to get worse for Republican candidates. The only chance that Republicans have at winning the election in 2016 is if Hillary Clinton runs. If there is one thing that Americans hate more than rich white racists, it's old ugly fat women.

  • No, the GOP can win the next election, but it will take one of two things:

    * A Libertarian Style nominee - it will be hard for someone like a Ron Paul (not him, but Rand or Gary Johnson or ...) to get the nomination, but they would do extremely well in the general. All GOP voters plus the vast majority of independents. When polled on topics alone, the average citizen is Libertarian (fiscally conservative and socially liberal).

    * A female/minority nominee - it will have to be a quality individual with an impeccable background b/c the liberal media will do everything in their power to tear down a female/minority GOP candidate. This would threaten the DEM's major advantage.

A GOP candidate that is for:
    * flat or fair tax - a revision that eliminates loopholes and broadens the tax base (everyone pay something)
    * Immigration Reform tied to Secure Borders - put illegals to the back of the line, but allow them a legal path that will require them to put into the system (pay taxes). At the same time, secure the boarder and eliminate citizenship opportunity to those that do not comply with the "path to citizenship".
    * has one of the 2 aforementioned qualities

= Pretty darn good chance of winning
