So the kicker (Griffith?) sucks? Haha. USC signed the top kicker the year before, and he was money as a freshman, but sucked as a sophomore. He had a pulled hammy or something, though, so hopefully he'll be better this season.
He has looked good in practice, but with kickers you never know either.
We actually have a good position battle going on there between him and Foster.
Boy it hurts to see Ryan Kelly and Trey DePriest starting for Bama. Those are two boys I wish were Buckeyes.
We honestly reload on the OL every year.
2009- LT James Carpenter, LG Mike Johnson, C William Vlachos, RG Barrett Jones, RT Drew Davis
2010- LT James Carpenter, LG Chance Warmack, C William Vlachos, RG Barrett Jones, RT DJ Fluker
2011- LT Barrett Jones, LG Chance Warmack, C William Vlachos, RG Anthony Steen, RT DJ Fluker
2012- LT Cyrus Kouandjio, LG Chance Warmack, C Barrett Jones, RG Anthony Steen, RT DJ Fluker
2013- LT Cyrus Kouandjio, LG Arie Kouandjio, C Ryan Kelly, RG Anthony Steen, RT Anthony Shephard
There will definitely be some drop-off from the 2012 OL, seeing how it was the best of all-time. But we should still be solid.
Ryan Kelly > Barrett Jones
Not right away, but he will be better
Mark it down
fsufsu said... I've got about 10 great stories on Lane but all you need to know is he will never be a loser, that's for sure.
In terms of ability, you're absolutely correct. Prototypical Center and one of the reasons Bama fans aren't as worried about OL is the high praise he's received so far. It certainly doesn't hurt to learn from Barrett considering Barrett's knowledge of the offense and game.
Homerism aside, I still can't believe that Barrett got drafted to be a back up. I guess I don't now measurables enough?
Good lord you know alot about Bama. Admit it... you're a closet Bammer.
Barrett just really wasn't that special
He is like a Brett Romberg, the glue and leader of a national championship college team... but really doesn't possess next level talent
Ryan Kelly does
If you put Jones on a team where he wasn't surrounded by guys like Fluker, Warmack and so on.... then nobody would have given two shits about him

The guy made freshman all-SEC and didn't even start. Granted I can't name any other freshman centers in the league that got any snaps at all, but he was our 5th best lineman and would have filled in if injuries had occurred. I'm stoked to see what Kelly can do over the next few years.

I agree with what another poster said before me. In terms of ability, yes, he should be better down the road, IMO. Hard to replace a leader like Barrett though that was a 4 year starter and could play any position on the line and do it at such a high level.
He played every position on the OL, he really didn't do it at that high a level
They gave that kid so many awards cause he was a scholar, was as white as Michael Jackson wishes he was and spoke well
He really wasn't that good, if he was.... he would have gone a lot sooner than mid 4th round
Sure thing buddy.
He dominated Barkevious Mingo for 2 games at LT against LSU in 2011. Not one hurry or sack from Mingo in those game. As a starter at LT in 2011, he gave up a total of 1 sack. Seems pretty good to me.
This past year, he handled both NGs for UGA and Nix from Notre Dame on a broken foot and never let any of them make plays in the running game or in the passing game in either games. Not bad on one foot. Him being able to do so is the reason Warmack and Steen were able to humiliate LBer after LBer against Notre Dame.
4th round isn't bad for a guy that is probably going to be a center in the NFL that really could never could fully work out at the Combine or at any pro day and still has questions regarding his foot.
I understand not liking the guy as he has been one of the focal points of college football the last couple of years, but saying he really wasn't that good is laughable at best.
Hudson was a guard in college, went early second round to be a center
Face it brah, Jones is nothing special and only Bama fans like yourself think he is the cats pajamas
Mingo ? lol, who says he will be any good ?
Facts are facts, he played in a system loaded with talent and was coached well by one of the best in the business
His flaws were shielded well, the kid isn't that talented and the NFL scouts agreed
Lolz at thinking I don't like him, I just don't give a shit about him cause Im not a Bama fan and I know talent when I see it.... he doesn't have any
Tank Carradine could also barely work out, only started at FSU for one year due to somebody else getting hurt... he went second round, not 4th

So much fail in this post.
Its really not if you know talent
He went 4th round for a reason, and its because most of his awards were very undeserving
His resume reads like something that should be a sure fire first rounder, but this is why college awards mean jack shit in a nut shell
Cause they are mostly a popularity contest
The only people that will have a problem with me saying these truths are Bama fans because nobody else thinks he is that great, and in a few years he will be out of the NFL looking for work in the real world
i just want ryan kelly to eat
just eat, man
He looked bossy and huge in the spring game, I watched him closely and he looked like a manimal out there
Dude has the size but isn't particularly athletic and he's a lunger like Kyle Long. He's also soft* imo. Way overhyped. Disagree with Nova that he'll be out of the league anytime soon though. That is unless he gets hurt, which is like a 95% probability.
Edit: Soft by NFL standards

I was joking with that one, but yeah... he is way over-hyped
He was a smart, good kid so the media took a liking to him.... when that happens, you tend to get awards you wouldn't be getting otherwise
Add the fact he played for Bama, well you get a resume that doesn't fit the players actual talent imo
Well everyone knows I'm a huge Barrett homer and have been for awhile. But to say he's not a great football player seems a bit of stretch.
He made All-American as a LT, and it was consensus. Followed it up with an All-American year at C. I guess you can say it's a popularity contest, bc other Cs were drafted ahead of him, but it's not like the guy had to sign a free agent deal. He's coming off foot surgery, which didn't help his draft status and probably cost him a round, maybe even two.
The guy was a great college football player but will probably be a role player in the NFL.
Ryan Kelly better? I hope so. But he'll have to earn that praise.
Never said he wasn't a great football player
I said he isn't a great NFL level talent, most aren't... its take much more than being a great football player imo
And I told you already that Kelly will be better, you laughed at me then.... soon you will eat that laughter
Give it 2 years, Kelly will earn it
I wanted him so badly when he visited FSU and showed us a little love
He was a great college football player. Still way overhyped though. He was surrounded by insane talent and he's a big, white, well-spoken, super Christian kid playing on the best team in America. Shocking that he needs a wheel barrow to cart all the awards away.
I'm not saying he'll be a bust, he'll probably be in the league in some capacity 10 years easy. That's a home run.
Haha I try to follow all the top teams closely. Some conferences more than others (SEC and Pac-12), and some teams more than others (Bama since they've won 3 out of 4).
Let me see....who was that FSU QB that won a Heisman (still laughing at that choice), but couldn't get drafted? I seem to remember the closest he got to the draft was as the back-up PG for the Knicks.
Now that's a no-talent hack. Couldn't even get drafted. What a loser.
