Mom's chihuahua was attacked by a lab earlier today. This picture is of his shoulder. Could it just be muscle swelling or do y'all think it could be broke? He is able to walk very gingerly though.
Honestly, kinda hard to say for sure just looking at this picture. My gut tells me, with that level of swelling there is likely a fracture. It is possible to have that sort of swelling without a break but it would usually feel fluid filled and likely be a hematoma/seroma.
Could probably tell right off the bat if I put my hands on it, but that's not a lot of help to you. If there is a high level of pain (such as you touch it and he freaks out) it is more suggestive of a fracture, also being non-weight bearing is suggestive of a break(although some will toe-touch). These last two things are helpful, but can confuse you do to the fact that some dogs are more stoic with a greater pain tolerance than others.
Appreciate the reply. From what you have said I'm leaning more towards a fracture. He can't stand it when you put any type of pressure on the swelling. He is going to the vet tomorrow. Just wanted to get an idea of what they might tell us. Thanks again.
No problem, hopefully my gut is wrong and it's just some soft tissue trauma. You'll come off cheaper that way.

I am sorry for your dog, but that chihuahua is fat as fvck.
Either that dog is fed way too much or it never gets exercise
How do you get the dog badge?

Just ask for it. I had a buddy make it for me and I send the names to a tech guy that want it.
Haha. He eats a good bit. He is eight or nine so he doesn't ever get in a hurry to do much. Also, he was abused when he was a puppy had a broken leg. So he has always been kinda hampered.
Hopefully it's not a break, if so $$$. I was thinking along the same lines a bamaDvm. Also you can buy that dog food to help with the weight but it won't help alone.
Bump for update.
Haven't talked to anyone today. Left early this morning for work. Try to give my mom a call later and see what the vet said.
UPDATE THIS THREAD PLEASE.
Y u no answer PM
Vet said no breaks. He basically just had the hell beat out of him by a dog 5x his size is what he said. My stepdad also told me that karma has visited the mutt that got ahold of him.
So you are saying that your father either beat the hell out of or killed a dog that got into a fight with your dog? Why was something as small as a fat ass chihuaha even in the predicament of being in the vicinity of another neighborhood dog unsupervised?
That dog just roamed around. They live out in the country and he just shows up from time to time. It wouldn't have been a huge deal, but my nieces were outside with their little dog(and their mother) and my moms chihuahua. Nieces are 6 and 3. So better he got my mom's dog than them. Stepdad wasn't taking the chance he gets one of them next time though. He wasn't a friendly dog by any stretch of the imagination.
Well I'm not going to get on your father completely being at fault either. The neighbor should look after his dog as well. I just bought 28 acres of land and a home and I haven't even started moving furniture there. One of the first things I bought was one of those electric signal fences with a collar. My dogs have never strayed far from the house, but it's always better to be careful.
