I love my 29er, it makes it over obstacles so much easier than a 26er and if you are on any straight stretches you will pull away from your buddies that aren't riding 29ers

It really is amazing how 3'' can make such a huge difference. Don't have to pop the front tire up really ever anymore, you just ride right over everything.

I'm seeing barely used Specialized 29er hardtails for about $500 on CL.
You can have a good range of selection for 1k. I have a Gary Fisher and love it. Specialized makes a good bike, Trek, Giant. Go to your local bike shop and try some out and find one that your are comfortable with.
Make sure the frame fits your height.. I'm 5'10 and have a 19"
